Ballard, Marilyn Ann (McManus)
Obituary
Marilyn Ann McManus Ballard was born on November 1, 1934 in San Angelo, Texas to the late Bill and Zella McManus. She passed away on Friday, June 2, 2017 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 82 years old. Marilyn grew up in San Angelo, Texas. She was raised with her younger brother, Bill McManus. She attended high school and college in San Angelo. Marilyn was an excellent writer and many of her articles were published in the San Angelo Central Times. She was employed by San Angelo Chamber of Commerce. She met her future husband, Lt. David Ballard at First Presbyterian Church. While he was singing in the church choir, he looked into the congregation and was smitten by Marilyn sitting in the front row as her family did every Sunday. They were married on June 4, 1955 in San Angelo. Marilyn always cherished her West Texas roots. She was passionate about the family ranch and the lake cabin that her father built. She always had fond memories of Aunt Lorene’s chocolate pie cooked on a wood stove. She developed a love for baking, and even won a blue ribbon for her chocolate cake. Marilyn was known for her famous pie crust and her Texas Chili. She loved baseball and writing stories about Friday night baseball – all the way to cheering Pudge Rodriquez on as a Texas Ranger. Marilyn was a strong Christian and always had a copy of “My Daily Bread” devotional by her bedside. Marilyn always said “Pretty is as Pretty does” and she was respectful and kind. Lisa and Meredith’s blessing is what a wonderful grandmother Marilyn was. She passed down strong holiday and family traditions. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Zella McManus. She is survived by her daughter, Meredith Akin and husband, Jack of McKinney, Texas; daughter, Lisa Hanes and husband, Don of Richardson, Texas; grandchildren, Jake Akin, Josh Akin, Lauren McDonald and Katie Hashem; and brother, Bill McManus and wife, Judy of San Angelo, Texas. Marilyn was always a wonderful mother and was so proud of her daughters, Lisa and Meredith. She was a pleasure to be around and, truly, always had a smile on her face. So glad that her resting place will be in San Angelo.
