Obituary

John Richard Murray passed away peacefully Monday July 3, 2017 after a long struggle with cancer.  He is preceded in passing by his parents John Richard Murray and June Hollett, as well as his sister Maryalice Murray. In life, he loved golf, sports, his friends, and family.  He practiced dentistry in Lake Highlands for over 43 years.  His patients highly appreciated his caring attitude, ethical approach to dentistry, and his wonderful dental work.  His patients grieved when he closed his practice.  We would like to thank his right hand in his work, Beth Teofan.  Beth was a wonderful assistant to John and a dear friend to him as well.  We thank Steven Conley for always being a best friend to John as they have many stories and adventures together only best friends could.  We thank his brother Dan who was very close with John, as only brothers can be.  We also want to thank Alan Baker his AA sponsor and golf friend.  No one could have been more of a steadfast and true friend. His last months were spent under the care of those he loved best in life, his wonderful sons Patrick, Andrew, Tim, Marsha (his ex-wife), and his close and Ioving brother Dan and sister in law Lana Murray who were so helpful and caring.  While we grieve, we are happy he is no longer uncomfortable and home at last with the Lord and his family. He is survived by his three sons Patrick, Andrew, and Tim Murray, and his best friend Marsha Murray.  John is also survived by his wonderful group of siblings; Dan Murray, Colleen FitzGerald, Maureen Philbrook, Bart Murray, and Patricia (Trish) Seemon as well as his 17 nieces and nephews who loved him very much. A memorial will take place at 10am on July 29.  The location will be at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church.  9800 Preston Rd, Dallas, TX 75230.  A reception at the church will follow directly after. The family requests any donations be made in John’s name to Doctors Without Borders, www.doctorswithoutborders.org . Arrangements are under the direction of: Aria Cremation Service & Funeral Home 10116 E. NW Highway Dallas, Texas 75238 214.340.8008

Dr. Murray was my dentist for 27 years. He was so personable and always made me feel comfortable. He took great care of my teeth and performed such detailed, meticulous work. My biggest regret is that I wasn’t able to say goodbye to him and Beth when he closed his practice. He was a very nice and considerate man. It was such a privilege to have known him for so many years. I will certainly miss him.

I worked next door to Dr. Murray for many years and he and Beth were always the most wonderful people. He was the only dentist who would agree to work on my disabled daughter and always ask about her even when he wasn’t fixing her teeth. I have a lot of respect for the man and I’m so grateful he is out of his suffering. God bless his family and friends

I had the special pleasure of being one of John’s golf friends. He always had a way to make me laugh whether he intended to or not. On occasion I would go practice with him on Saturdays with Allan Baker. Those times were so pure with nothing more than enjoying the morning and the company. Life is full of agendas and it is difficult to find people who have none and just want to be there in the moment. I will miss John very much.
    God Bless You, John.

He loved to make a long putt. I loved to watch his reactions. I always liked it when the computer paired us together.
Did not know him well but always enjoyed his company on the golf course.

I had the pleasure to meet John these last 4 years while playing golf with him on Sundays. He and I had something in common, like John, my Dad was also a dentist (pediatrics). He always marveled how my Dad cared for kids for over 40 years during his practice. I always marveled how caring John was and made it a point to say how great my Dad was. And to the family, it’s hard to understand why people are taken from us, but find comfort in knowing you were a special part of such a well-lived life. My deepest condolences.

Dr. Murray loved hearing this story… In the early fall of 1991, I was laid off from the company I had worked at for 12 years when they moved from Dallas to Waco and we didn’t want to move to Waco. At the same time, I lost our dental insurance. Not sure how they found out about me, but I got what I thought was “junk mail” from the Dallas County Dental Club with a long list of potential replacement dentist’s names. I took that list to my then-current dentist, Larry Cloetta, told him my plight, and asked if he knew anyone on the list who was as good as he was…after scanning that list, he picked one name out, “John Murray”. I have been a patient of John’s ever since. It’s been a hard year for him and his family and Beth, his trusted office-mate, and I know all his former patients miss him as much as I do. God Bless.

We were just getting ready to make an appointment for our six month teeth cleaning and check up when we were surprised to receive a letter from John telling us he was closing his practice and we did not know why. We were very saddened when we learned of his illness months later. He was our dentist for 40 years and took good care of us, We loved talking with him, as I teased him about golf, Sudan, and we talked sports a lot and even went to some SMU basketball games. I am only sorry we didn’t go to more together. We will miss his dental expertise, harassing Beth and our jovial conversations.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know it has been almost a year since his passing. John was my dentist all my adult life. He was wonderful. He always asked about my job and my family. He seemed to truly care. He will be missed.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
