Guendulain, Jose C.
Obituary
GUENDULAIN, Jose Calvo, Born on April 16, 1926. Don Jose peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017, surrounded by his love ones. He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Toscano, parents Justino Guendulain and Clotilde Calvo, his eldest son Jorge Luis, six brothers and one sister. Jose was born and raised in San Miguel de Sola de Vega, Oacaxa, Mexico leaving to the US at the young age of 14. Don Jose is survived by his children, Rosa Elia Guendulain, Daniel Guendulay, Eric Guendulay, Jose Luis Guendulay, Belinda Guendulay, Angelina Guendulay, and Rosa Maria Guenduley along with her husband, Dionicio Aviles. He was blessed with 9 Grandchildren: Manuel, Mario, Gabriella, Austin, Vanessa, Karinna, Brianna, Daniella, and Alexandra and 5 Great Grandchildren: Anna, Hallise, Pierce, Averie, Nevaeh, and many beloved, cousins, nephews, nieces, friends. He worked as a Union Master Mason throughout the US, specializing in brick arches and brick spiral staircases to the point he was sought out and flown to many specific job sites for his architectural personal touch. Dad’s work ethic and reputation for excellence precede him. Like any career – the best rose to the top. Our dad could walk on any job site and get hired on the spot. With great pride, he would tell us all “the foreman would say Joe if we don’t have a spot for you we will make one, see you at 8:00 am and bring your tools.” Dad loved his profession and anyone who knew him could attest to that. He proudly stated “I worked on that building; I worked on that building; I worked on that building” pointing everywhere. He was confident and always stated “if you see cranes in the sky I have a job”. His love of architecture influenced his custom design pieces for pro bono work at churches and commissioned private homes. His last contribution to our city right before retirement is the tall building that we all know as City Place on Central Expressway. These skill sets guaranteed him a long-lasting career of 45 years. Don Jose was of minimal structured education but he was determined to learn many things. He had the motivation and discipline to teach himself to read and write English by using the Sunday paper enjoying the “Blondie and Dagwood” comic strip as his motivator. He later became impassioned with World History, Maps and Almanacs, State and Presidents from the US and Mexico and could recite them chronology all to you on the spot. For us, he was the first GQ man. He dressed sharp ALWAYS! He wore polished Stacy Adams adding a tailor-made suit, topped off with felt Italian Fedoras. He LOVED baseball and wouldn’t miss an opportunity to sit back and enjoy a game. He was fortunate to make it to the World Series in 2009 Texas Rangers vs. New York Yankees Game with his grandson Austin and just had the biggest smile for the longest time. At family gatherings, he would sit at the head of the table, his chest puffed with pride observing his surroundings and taking credit for his creations. Often saying “Mira lo que ese” (Look at what I made) with a twinkle in his eye. He loved us dearly and we loved him. A celebration of Don Jose’s life will be held this Saturday, September 2nd, 2017 at ARIA Cremation Service and Funeral Home, 19310 Preston Rd, Dallas, TX 75252 (George Bush at Preston).
