Obituary

Canara ‘Cowboy’ Grayson Carruth of Irving, Texas, passed away on October 22, 2017, just a month shy of his 94th birthday.  He was born in Canadian, Texas, the son of Thomas G. and Willie Lee Anderson.  Growing up in the Dust Bowl era, he graduated from Miami (Texas) High School and was the last survivor of that graduating class. After serving as a Marine on Iwo Jima, Saipan & Tinian, he returned to Miami to marry Hallie Vontell Alexander on April 28, 1943.  They resided in Pampa until 1968 when they relocated to Irving, Texas.  He was an extraordinary salesman of various products and earned the name ‘Cowboy’ as clients struggled with his real name.  He was an active member of the Westside Church of Christ. Canara is predeceased by his parents, his wife, Hallie Vontell  Carruth; his sister, Thomasine Handley; and two brothers-in-law, Owen Handley and John C. Alexander.  He is survived by his daughter, Misty Carruth of Irving; son, Tom Carruth and husband Rob Krueger of Altadena, California.  Grandchildren include Michael Carruth, serving in the Army, Ashley White and Roy White of Decatur, and Stephanie Curtiss of Dallas.  Three days before he departed, his eighth great grandchild was born. A memorial service will be held on November 1 at 6PM at the Aria Cremation Service & Funeral Home in Irving.  To honor Canara’s love of bright colors, we ask those who are attending to wear at least one piece of brightly color clothing.  The family is recommending that donations in Canara’s honor be made to the Disabled American Veterans.     Please send the family condolences and sign the guest book on this site. "I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."
