Obituary
Martha Hunter Mattay, 80, of Carrollton, Texas, passed away in her sleep on November 24, 2017. Martha was born in University Park, Dallas on September 3, 1937. She was a 1955 graduate of Highland Park High School and received a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from North Texas State College in 1958. Among many campus activities, Martha was involved in Varsity Life (IVCF) where she met her future husband, Carl Mattay. Martha was married to Carl Mattay on August 22, 1959. They celebrated their 58th anniversary this year. “She’s the best thing that ever happened to me!” Carl says. Martha loved Jesus, and children. Among her most cherished work was her 32 years as a preschool teacher for First Baptist Church of Carrollton Preschool. Also of note is her devotion to the children of Grace Bible Church, Dallas where she taught Sunday School for 42 years. Her grandchildren remember her always happily serving at home and church. They remember her steadfast strength of character and compassion. She had an abundance of energy, enjoying babysitting her grandchildren and taking them to Six Flags and Texas Rangers Baseball games! Martha attended every school event she could. Her family was her highest priority just behind her great love for God and sharing His Love and Salvation with anyone she might meet. Martha is survived by her husband Carl Mattay, their four children, 12 grandchildren, and one great grandson. Daughter Machelle McDowell and her husband Bill McDowell, grandson Josh. Mark Mattay and his wife Lynn Mattay, grandchildren Morgan, Molly, Nathanael and his wife Erica, Naomi, and great-grandson Ezra. Daughter Miriam Fretheim and her husband Peter Fretheim, grandchildren Hannah, Elizabeth, Hunter, and Sarah. Son Marshall Mattay, grandchildren Mason, and Megan. Martha is preceded in death by her granddaughter Amanda Machelle McDowell; her twin sister Mary ‘Ski’ Hunter, and her older sister Margaret ‘Maggie’ Hunter. Visitation will be held at 6-8:00 o’clock Wednesday evening November 29, 2017 at North Dallas Funeral Home, Farmers Branch. The memorial service will be held at 7 o’clock on November 30, 2017 at Grace Bible Church, Dallas, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to SIM City Ministries benefitting Peter and Miriam’s work in Nigeria. Checks can be made payable to ‘SIM’ with ‘City Ministries #85550’ written on the memo. Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us everyday, unseen, unheard but always near so loved, so missed, so very dear, Ms Martha Mattay, for the time av known you, you and your husband plus the whole family you were such a blessing to me, I am so sad but am happy too to know that those who die in the Lord never die but rest in God’s arms, you fought a good fight , kept the faith and finished the race. My sincere condolences to the Mattay’s family, wish you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to hold in your heart, rip mama!
So sorry to hear of Martha’s passing. Such a lovely lady. She helped care for our grandchildren at FBCC Preschool. Sending our love and prayers from another Newman Smith High School family.
