Cora Segovia
January 8, 1937 – December 27, 2017
In Memoriam
SEGOVIA, María del Socorro Cantu (“Cora”), beloved and faithful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, godmother, cousin and friend, entered eternal life on December 27, 2017, after battling cancer like the unbelievable warrior she was. Preceded in death by her parents, Vicente C. Cantú Vargas and Narcedalia Benavides de Cantú, Cora is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Dr. Arturo A. Segovia and their children Art Segovia, Jr., wife Cindy; Tony Segovia, wife Elaine; Patty Odom, husband Steve; Chachy Heppe, husband Hans; their eight grandchildren Taylor, Katelynn, Nick, Ryan, Rachael, Helena, Otto and Wil; and their great granddaughter Rylynn. She is also survived by her siblings, Lupana, Narce, China and Vicente Cantú, and many cousins, godchildren, nephews and nieces. Born on January 8, 1937, in Anáhuac, Nuevo León, Cora assumed great responsibility early in life. At age 16, when Cora’s beloved mother passed away early in life, the family moved to Monterrey, Nuevo León, where Cora took on the maternal role for her beloved sisters, and where fate would unite Cora and the love of her life. Cora and Arturo met at the Plaza La Alameda in Monterrey. Both Cora’s grandparents’ home and the church Iglesia Evangélica Lúterana La Santa Cruz founded by Arturo’s father, an ordained Lutheran minister, were located at the plaza. It may be considered love at first site, and the young couple dedicated their lives to one another on July 20, 1953. After dating for eight years throughout Arturo’s medical studies and internships, Cora and Arturo married on November 18, 1961, in Chicago, where Arturo began his residency in anesthesiology. While in Chicago, Cora and Arturo started and grew their family with the birth of Art, Tony and Patty. In 1970, they moved to Dallas where they settled permanently for Arturo to begin his medical practice. In Dallas, they achieved the American dream–they purchased their lifelong home and contributed to the greater community. Cora loved her home immensely and graciously welcomed dear family and friends and hosted lively gatherings. Cora and Arturo further grew their family with the birth of their fourth and youngest child, Chachy. Cora loved life and lived her 80 plus years to the fullest. She loved to travel with friends and family—all over the country and world—with planes, trains and automobiles—enjoying nature, cities and all adventure. She also enjoyed her trips to the casino, especially with the company of her sisters. Cora loved watching sports—football, basketball, soccer, you name it. Cora loved theater and dance, and gave back to her community by serving in active leadership roles with ACAL de México, the Pan American Round Table and a stunning Ballet Folklórico dance group. She was also active in other civic leadership roles including serving on the Board of the Dallas Arboretum. Cora’s warm and welcoming personality endeared her to all who knew and loved her, including her Canasta friends who gathered for decades to play cards and tell jokes, her fitness group friends of many years, and weekly gatherings of dear friends and family at home or at the Ranch with beautiful Mexican ballad singing, dancing, poem reciting and delicious traditional food. She radiated love and joy. And if someone was sick, they could at least look forward to Cora bringing them her amazing arroz con pollo to help them get better. The true treasures of her life were her eight beloved grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “Mamita” or simply “Ita,” and the most recent addition of a great granddaughter. Cora’s grandchildren treasured their Mamita’s unconditional love and affection, Spanish lessons, and of course her food, with Mamita’s guiso, arroz con pollo and just plain “Mamita’s rice” on top of their list of favorites. Cora loved to cheer on her grandchildren at their games and admire them at their recitals –she was always their biggest fan. Most importantly, Cora was a woman of immense faith. She loved the Lord with all her heart, mind and soul. Faith and love of God was forefront in her life and how she raised and sustained her family. Suffice it to say, a truly amazing woman has departed from our sight, and her many friends and family will miss her terribly. To many of us, it is the end of an era without our sweet Cora here on earth. She is one of a kind, and there will never be another like her. Incredibly beautiful, radiant, elegant, loving, funny, loyal and caring, she will live on in the hearts of family and friends who remember her as the best wife, mom, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, godmother, aunt, cousin, friend and “Mamita” anyone could be. We give thanks to God for her wonderful time here on earth and her legacy that will live on forever through generations to come. Cora’s memorial service will be held on Monday, January 8th, the day that would have been her 81st birthday, at 1 p.m., at Water’s Edge Lutheran Church at 5475 Coit Road, Frisco, Texas 75035, with a reception to follow at the home of Art & Cindy Segovia, 5901 Norfolk Lane, Frisco, Texas (two blocks from the church). In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society in her honor to help find a cure to this menacing disease (https://www.cancer.org/involved/donate/memorial-giving.html). As we remember our beloved Cora on her birthday, we will take comfort in having been a part of her wonderful and amazing life. In Memoriam
I will forever keep her in my memory as being such a beautiful, elegant and classy lady. She would briefly attempt Spanish lessons on Sunday mornings at church when she would greet my children. We were very saddened to here of her passing, but we were priviliged to have known her. Juanita is especially sad to have lost such a close and dear friend. Cora and Dr. Segovia were always present at our special family occasions. We had so much fun together at so many parties. We will cherish our memories of a wonderful person with a beautiful manner of speaking, a person with natural elegance.
With love to our friend Dr. Segovia and the entire Segovia Cantu family,
Dr. & Mrs. Alfredo Zevallos & family
You must know how deeply saddened we are over your loss. Cora and my mom were the dearest of friends and I dare say she was like a sister to her. We will miss her very much. She came to trust her judgment and wisdom as well. Her advice was always so well thought out and helpful.
She has left us with so many wonderful memories. We will cherish them forever.
I am a resident of East Texas and had the privilege of meeting Cora at the Pan American Roundtable of Dallas. Her presence brought grace, elegance and charm and a lot of history of the origins of the Dallas Chapter. Her eyes sparkled as she shared stories of the ballet folkloric dances and dress in her earlier days. Her passion for life and service to others and her elegance is what I will remember about her. May God bless her family and circle of friends. Rest In Peace, Mrs.Cora Segovia.
