Obituary
Elijah Eugene Pigg, 89, of Richardson died Feb. 14 surrounded by family. He was born on Jan. 28, 1929 to William Taylor and Arva Gilliam Pigg in Colony, OK. One of ten siblings, he grew up a hardworking farm boy. He graduated as salutatorian from Colony High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma A&M. He entered the Korean War with the Oklahoma 45th Infantry.
After completing college with the help of the G.I. Bill, Gene moved to Texas and fell in love with a brown-eyed beauty. He married this love of his life, Helen Louise Flowers, on August 30, 1954. They were married for 62 years before her death in 2017. He rejoined her on Valentine’s Day. After retirement, Gene and Helen threw themselves into volunteer work. They were founding members of the Unity Church of Richardson and hosted National Nights Out in their neighborhood. Gene was a coordinator at Network of Community Ministries and a regional coordinator for AARP tax preparation services at the Richardson Public Library and the Senior Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, his granddaughter Julianne Warren, his parents and eight of his nine siblings. Survivors include his sister, Georgia Pigg Seery, daughters and their husbands, Becky and Keith Warren and Sharon and Tom Hathaway and his grandchildren Steven and wife Robyn Warren and Elaine Hathaway and fiancé Andrew Hightower. He is also survived by in-laws Jo Lorance Pigg, Jane Flowers Duffie, Alta Flowers Birdsong and husband, Ken, and numerous nieces and nephews.A celebration of life is set for 2 p.m. Mar. 9 at Unity on Greenville located at 3425 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas.
