Richards, Carl D.
July 29, 1928 - March 13, 2018
Carl Daniel Richards, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 13, 2018. Carl had been on hospice care since January and he passed away peacefully, after spending much time with loved ones in his last days. Dad, or Grandad, as he was called much of the time, was born in Stony Creek Mills, Pennsylvania, on July 29, 1928. He loved all kind of sports, and was very competitive, playing football in high school and at Penn State. He joined the Air Force, met his wife of 64 years, Ruby, and then retired as T/Sgt. His Air Force career included working on Hurricane Hunters aircraft in Bermuda, and B52’s in Strategic Air Command. After the Air Force, Carl continued to work for S&H Green Stamps, and then for the City of Benbrook. He and Ruby also volunteered at the Museum of Science and History during their retirement.
While Carl passionate about sports, he did not like umpires. The family fondly remembers getting thrown out of numerous baseball stadiums, when Carl played league ball in the Air Force. This tradition continued with his sons and grandsons, and it was pretty much expected that Grandad was going to loudly express his opinions on umpire calls during games. Carl was also loyal to his Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, and he drove Ruby in labor for the birth of his first two children, Karen and Carl Lee, to take place in Philadelphia, even though they were living in neighboring states. He would have done it with his third child, Brian, but they were living in Montana at the time and Ruby said no way.
Carl is preceded in death by his father, Carl Leroy Richards, and mother Bessie Viola Bingaman, and son Brian Richards. He will be missed by his loving wife, Ruby, daughter Karen LaBoon, son Carl Lee Richards, a host of grandchildren, Aaron LaBoon, Ryan, LaBoon, Harley Richards, Hayden Richards, and Emily Richards, and two great-granddaughters, Juliette LaBoon and Rosalie LaBoon.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm, at the Aria Chapel in Irving. Burial with full military honors will take place on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at 11:15 am at the Dallas – Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.
