Burns, Alvin E.
Obituary
Alvin Everett Burns, born November 12, 1931 in Magnolia, AR, died at his home in Dallas at the age of 86, and went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2018. Alvin was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting and subsequent CPA certification. In 1960 he co-founded his own Dallas-based CPA firm, eventually to be known as Middleton, Burns and Davis, where he enjoyed a successful 34-year career before retiring as managing partner in 1994. Alvin met his wife of 62 years, Ferrell Jean, while stationed in Louisville, KY during his brief military service. They married in 1956, moved to Dallas, and subsequently celebrated the births of their three children. Dedicated to faith and family, Alvin and his family were active in Baptist church life, eventually finding their home within the family of Wilshire Baptist Church where Alvin served, taught, and worshipped faithfully for over 40 years. Among his most personally-valued contributions in life was his service during the 1970s to the Baptist General Convention of Texas where he served as chair of both the Audit Committee and Christian Education Coordinating Board. In his capacity as liaison with the then financially-distressed Dallas Baptist College, his recommendations for financial restructuring ensured the survival of the school. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree for his service, and today Dallas Baptist University hosts Alvin’s legacy as thousands of students earn their education each year in the faith-based environment he successfully preserved. Alvin was a lover of family, history, education, and all things British. He enjoyed genealogical research and family folklore, as well as study of the Bible in its historical context. He taught Sunday School for over 40 years and fulfilled a life-long dream, at the age of 73, in three consecutive summer terms as a student of theology at Christ Church College in Oxford, England. Alvin enjoyed participating in numerous faith-based and community organizations, including the Greater Dallas Community of Churches, Dallas Interfaith Commission, Association of International CPAs, the Wilkinson Center, and the Jane Austen Society of North America. Alvin is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Ila Burns, and five siblings. He is survived by his wife, Ferrell Jean Gallimore Burns; son, Dwight Burns (and wife, Karen); daughter, Camille Riggs; son, Frank Burns (and wife, Tammy); and four adult grandchildren: Everett Burns, Alex Burns, Nick Burns, and Kylie Burns. Alvin’s family invites you to join them as they celebrate his life on Wednesday, March 28th at 1:30pm in the McIver Chapel of Wilshire Baptist Church, 4316 Abrams Rd in Dallas. The family has planned a private inurnment service to place Alvin at rest within Wilshire’s Columbarium Garden. Memorial gifts may be made to Pathways Pastoral Residency program at Wilshire Baptist Church
