Corbitt, Dr. Shirley A.
Obituary
Shirley was born in Dallas TX in June of 1935 to James E. Corbitt (deceased) and Mossie Pearl Seahorn Corbitt (deceased). She had one sister, Charline, who married John Rackley, both of whom predeceased her. She graduated from Oak Cliff’s Sunset High School in 1953. Shirley is survived by her dear friend Marjorie Buchanan along with her niece, Karen Kline, nephew Eric Boyd, and grandnephew Christopher Boyd. Shirley had an honorable career in Physical Education. She taught biology in both Dallas ISD and Texas A&M while gaining her undergraduate degrees. She completed her doctorate in 1969 from Texas Women’s University in Denton. She went on to become a professor at Southern Methodist University for 35 years. During her tenure at SMU, she was the first woman to hold the positions of Director of Athletics and Chairman of P. E. (1977). Shirley always expected the best from people and maintained friendships with both students and colleagues after retirement. Shirley and Margie were professional women who worked hard and played hard. They enjoyed over 20 years of retirement together traveling the world, visiting casinos, and generally having a great time! They loved to cruise and in the wake of every ship, lifetime friendships were formed, too many to count!

Shirley was an amazing, energetic and always positive person who enjoyed life, her friends and family, and her world travels. You will be missed but never forgotten. I have so many fond memories of our visits with Marge & Shirley while vising my brother in Dallas. My sincere condolences.
My husband and I first met Shirley and Marge on a cruise. They were such fun, intelligent and interesting people. We enjoyed their company every minute we spent together and made sure that we kept in touch and met as often as we could. Shirley will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
I knew Shirley since the early 70s. Her friend, Margie, worked for me for many years. Shirley and Margie were special people and I care for both of them very much. I pray that Margie will be able to deal with this great loss. I will miss the great hugs that Shirley always provided every time I saw her, which was not often enough.
I was a student of Shirley’s in the 60’s and 70’s, then a colleague in the late 80’s & 90’s. Shirley and Marge would walk at Dedman every morning and, then, come sit in my office and we’d ‘solve world problems’!! After Shirley retired and my husband and I retired, we kept in close touch and had many enjoyable visits. After EVERY visit, we would comment on “what fun people” they were! They brighten every room when they walked in…..there were always laughs! Shirley’s high standards never failed. She was an excellent example for her students. She will be missed.
Stanley and I are deeply sorry to hear of the passing of Shirley. May God bring you peace and comfort during this very difficult time. We met you both at church and you became our church family and a wonderful friendship grew from that. Love you❤️❤️
Shirley Corbitt has been a blessing in my life. She and Margie became my “moms” 20+ years ago. We shared a very special friendship that became like family. I will miss talking with her about anything and everything. I will never forget her.
My mom and I lived near Shirley and Marge many years ago in Polk Terrace near Carter High School. There would be weekly card games at their house. They taught me how to play canasta as a young girl. Later while I was at SMU, I would see her over at the athletic building-good bless you Shirley and Marge.
I have fond memories of working with Shirley at SMU, and remember that she taught me a lot. I was just starting my career and Shirley was a seasoned veteran. She expected excellence and had a deep concern for the well being of her students. My sincere condolences to her close friends and family.
Shirley was a delight to be around and she will be missed by all who knew her! My deepest sympathy for you Marge for I know it leaves a big hole in your life but you are a survivor so carry on that traveling! Shirley will smile down always like a rainbow!
My deepest condolences to Marge and all of Shirley’s family. So very very very sorry. Shirley was a true stoic–she was in pain and kept a positive attitude. Marge, you and Shirley were so wonderful, friendly, and helpful when I moved to Dallas — lovely neighbors. For sure Shirley will be missed. Marge, be strong….
Shirley always made me laugh. She had such great stories, whether about her travels with Marge or her students and colleagues. I just wish I had seen more of her and Marge in the past few years. Shirley will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
I’m very sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. I always enjoyed hearing stories of Shirley and Marge’s travels and adventures. She will be remembered by me and all who knew her.
