Ann Milburn
Holmes
Jun 5, 1922 — Oct 22, 2024
Ann Milburn Holmes, beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 102, rejoicing in her faith as she met her Savior, Jesus Christ. Born on June 5, 1922, in Atlanta, Georgia, she was the daughter of William Frank Milburn and Bennie Victoria Camp Milburn.
Ann grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Randolph Macon Women's College in 1943. The most exciting six months of her life were spent volunteering with the American Red Cross during World War II. In September 1945, she traveled from Washington D.C. to Manila, Philippines, where she served coffee, Coca-Cola, and donuts to enlisted men at the Roosevelt Club. Ann often described this as a "wonderful time," filled with laughter, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories. It was during this service that she met the love of her life, Lieutenant Tommy Holmes from New Orleans. They married in Atlanta on September 5, 1946.
Following their marriage, Ann and Tommy settled in New Orleans, living with his parents while he completed his degree at Tulane University. In 1954 after the birth of their daughter, Betsy, they moved to Monroe, Louisiana. Three more children followed: Katie, Tom, and Nancy. Ann's dream of a large, boisterous family came true. In 1967, she and three friends opened Yarn-tiques, a unique needlework shop that became a treasured resource for needlepointers, knitters, and crocheters across North Louisiana for two decades.
As the matriarch of her family, Ann was the glue that held her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren together. She was a passionate duplicate bridge player, a voracious reader, and a talented artist, excelling in both quilting and needlepoint. After Tommy's passing and over fifty years living in Monroe, Ann moved to Dallas and embraced thirteen wonderful years at Juliette Fowler Communities, where she made new friends and celebrated the arrival of her great-grandchildren.
Ann is predeceased by her husband, Thomas C. Holmes, her parents, her sister Helen Milburn Brumby, and her granddaughter Katherine Holmes Anthony. She is survived by her children: Betsy Holmes See (Al) of Dallas, Katie Holmes (Lon) of Port Townsend, WA, Tom Holmes (Jennifer) of Bowling Green, KY, and Nancy Holmes of Dallas. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Victoria Holmes See, Marianna See Williams, Rachel Holmes Smith, Camp Holmes, Zach Mifsud-Smith, Jordan Scarborough, Jessica Vaughan, and Julianne Vaughan; along with four great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for Ann will be held on Monday, December 2, at 3 pm in Schneider Chapel at Juliette Fowler Communities, 1234 Abrams Road, Dallas, Texas 75214. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Juliette Fowler Communities and Vitas Hospice for their compassionate care.
