Augustine Madrid joined our Heavenly Father in the early hours of Oct 9th. He was known by all as Tino, and by some as Tito. He loved God. He loved his family, his friends, and his work. He was a handyman, a storyteller, a piano player, and a jokester. He enjoyed cooking, traveling, and listening to music and man did he LOVE his beans.
Tino met the love of his life in Los Angeles where they would both ride around town on his 10 speed and sing "I've Got You Babe." At the young age of 20, they had their first daughter Diri, and three years later their first son, Tino. It was then that he started his career with Mobil. Mobil needed smart, strong leaders to travel the world and complete projects "on time and under budget." So, that's what he did and he did it well. In the mid-70s, he transferred the family to Dallas. Shortly after arriving in Dallas, the stork brought his son Gabriel, and two years later came David. Now the immediate family was complete, but the adventures were just starting. TV introduced him to Pippy Longstocking and that would spark last minute impromptu road trips that are now wonderful memories.
It was not long before Mobil needed someone to move to Mexico City for three years. So, that's what he did. Life in Mexico was grand. Thanks to a great exchange rate, the family lived life well. Big houses, private schools, and more great family adventures. Pippy may not have aired in Mexico but her spirit was alive in Tino and that meant more road trips and more memories. Three years flew by, and it was time to decide. Did the family want to continue living in different cities or move back to Dallas. All big decisions called for a family meeting and this meeting decided the family was moving back to Dallas.
Throughout his career, Tino made many long-lasting friendships in places all over the world. These friendships led to some crazy adventures in dozens of cities in the US, Mexico, Peru, Australia, Ghana, Belgium, Italy, and France. These adventures turned into amazing stories, sometimes too amazing. Tino didn't mind embellishing from time to time. (Almost always)
His stories were not all travel related. Sometimes he would recount his dreams where his subconscious would reveal new recipes to him. This made for some delicious breakfast mornings, although sometimes we had to wait until dinner to try the recipe. In addition to his stories, he also enjoyed reciting his Titoisms. "Swimming or Swamming?" "Bring that up again and we'll vote on it!" "I don't know, can you?" "Pete and Re-Pete.." "You don't know, or you don't care." "There's no life without beans!" This could go on forever…
Tino taught his love of music to the family. During the age of vinyl, Tino would make a trip to K-mart every Sunday morning after church to buy a handful of 45's for 50 cents each. Loaded with fresh tunes, weekend mornings were always set to music. Not always records though; sometimes wonderful melodies would burst out of the piano at his fingertips.
After retiring from ExxonMobil, Tino filled his days with remodels, handyman projects, and even full clinic buildouts. Once a year for many, many years, he was the host to some epic New Year's Eve parties and summer picnics. Tino and Rose had a brief chapter in a quiet country house in Nacogdoches where they enjoyed the small-town life and the annual Blueberry Festival. They were also snowbirds and loved to spend winters in their Casita in Chapala.
Regularly, he spent time with members of his now much larger family - his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. He also made it a point to visit his brothers, sisters, sister-in-law, and their families. He cared for them all very much.
Tino is reunited with his father Perfecto Madrid and his mother Angela Madrid and his siblings, Ernest, Louis, Cecilia Serrano, and Ray. He is survived by his wife Rose Marie Madrid, his siblings, Fred and Baby Madrid and Ofelia Carrillo, his children Diri Lacy, Tino Madrid and wife Michell, Gabriel Madrid and wife Bethany, David Madrid and wife April, as well as his wonderful grandchildren, Jessica, James, Jenny, Amanda, Jordan, Harper, Cari, and Brandon and great-grandchildren, Roric, Liam, and Gideon.
