Forrest Grant Baker, Jr., was born September 22, 1925, in Tipton, Iowa, and he passed away April 26, 2015, at The Forum at Park Lane in Dallas, TX. His parents were Forrest Grant Baker and Irma Ruth Gillette. He was eight when his father died and his mother married Charles Crawford. In 1943 he graduated from high school and immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corps. After a 3-year stint in the Army Air Corps Forrest was separated with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He finished his college years at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and the State University of Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa, graduating with an M. S. in geology. In 1949 he married his childhood sweetheart, Phyllis Lucile Bolton, and was soon hired by the Atlantic Refining Company as a trainee geophysicist. His work with ARCO for more than 30 years was very interesting because it involved the evaluation of many exploratory wells. His travels took him to off-shore wells in the Gulf of Mexico, off the California coast, in the Arctic Ocean, the Aleutian Islands, and other places in Alaska. He was fortunate enough to be assigned to work the discovery well of the Prudhoe Bay Field, which is the largest oil field in North America. He retired from ARCO in 1985. He enjoyed the following years by doing volunteer woodwork at University Park United Methodist Church, serving in the church library, volunteering at the Dallas Museum of Natural History, and delivering Meals on Wheels. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-sisters Norene Schilling, Edith Glidden, and Eva Lu Murrison; and his brother John Crawford. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Lucile Bolton Baker; their 3 daughters Kathryn Elizabeth Baker Kennedy, Judith Ann Baker Barnes, and Christine Ruth Baker; his sister, Patricia Sue Crawford; a son-in-law, Jay Cooper Barnes; and two grandsons and their wives: Grant Baker Barnes (DeSay) and Charles Galen Barnes (Kim). A memorial service will be held at University Park United Methodist Church Friday at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to University Park United Methodist Church, 4024 Caruth Blvd., Dallas, TX 75225, or to a charity of your choice.
