Obituary

Derek Lee Barnett, 38, died on November 3, 2017 in Dallas, Texas. A visitation and memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 14 from 3-5 PM at Aria Funeral Home, located at 19310 Preston Rd in Dallas, Texas. Pastor Terry Barnett will preside over the memorial service beginning at 4 PM. Derek was born on November 9, 1978 in Denison, Texas to Theo and Nora Cherry Barnett. He grew up in Denison and graduated from Denison High School in 1997. Derek spent many years working in the restaurant industry in Wichita Falls and Dallas. For the past several years, Derek was a bartender at Jack Macs Swill & Grill. He was well-liked by both his co-workers and the regulars there. His former employer and co-workers will have a reception in remembrance of Derek immediately following the memorial service at Jack Macs Swill & Grill located at 19009 Preston Road in Dallas, Texas. Derek had a close circle of friends, Marcus Rogers and Jason McElrath, that became his family over the years. They were brothers to him. He was blessed by their constant love and support. Derek acted as godfather to Marcuss children Marley and Mason. He was also the godfather to Jasons son Colton. Katie Vullo and Courtney Jones were two very dear friends to Derek who meant a great deal to him. Derek was preceded in death by his mother, Nora Cherry Barnett and his grandparents, Paul Cherry and Bessie Brewer. Survivors include his father, Theo Barnett and wife, Cindy Sailor of Round Rock, Texas; a sister, Chrystal Barnett Ryckman and husband, Paul Ryckman of Menoken, North Dakota and their children, Warren and Micayla; a brother, Brad Barnett and wife, Mandy Barnett of Murphy, Texas and their son, Cooper. Derek is also survived by his uncle, Terry Barnett and wife, Annette Barnett of Whitesboro, Texas; his aunt, Paula Cherry Castle and husband, David Castle of Bonham, Texas; and his aunt, Susan Cherry Anderson of Denison, Texas; and several cousins. Dereks immediate family extends our sincerest thanks to all of his friends and their parents who gave time, support, and love to Derek during his life. Derek will always be remembered for his sharp wit and fun-loving personality. Be happy for Derek that he is now reunited with his mother, Nora, who he has deeply missed since she passed away when he was a young boy.
