Obituary

Bertha Lewis Murphy (Beth), beloved mother and grandmother, 88 years old of Dallas, Texas passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025. She was surrounded by members of her family, daughter Laura Pippard, her husband Wes Pippard and Daughter Ashleigh Pippard as well as her son Doug Murphy and his wife Julie Murphy.

Beth was born in Greenville, Kentucky on December 16, 1936. She grew up on a farm with her parents Jesse Cloyd Spurlin and Mary Elizabeth Wimberly Spurlin and sisters Claudean and Phyliss. She attended Murray State University regional campus in Fort Campbell, where she received her RN degree and met her husband, Walter Murphy. He was stationed there in the army. They were married on August 8, 1958.

After marriage they moved back to Chicago and started their family and had four children, Walter James, Martin Douglas, Laura Lynn and Luanne Mora. They moved out of the city to the suburb of Oaklawn when Luanne was still a baby. Once the children were older, Beth went back to work in nursing specializing in geriatric care. She worked at Monticello Nursing Home in Oaklawn. The family moved to Texas in December of 1979. She went to work at RHD Memorial Hospital, Farmers Branch, TX in their geriatric center and later moved to Trinity Medical, Carrollton, TX geriatric center. She decided to semi-retire and went to work at MHMR, McKinney, TX part time until her full retirement.

Beth loved spending time with her family. She always hosted all the holidays at the house and everyone was always welcome. She especially loved her grandchildren and was always available to babysit or attend any and all school and extracurricular activities that they were involved in. Walt and Beth loved Hawaii and spent 3 weeks of the year each spring staying in their timeshare.

Beth is preceded in death by her parents Jess Cloyd and Mary Elizabeth Spurlin, her husband Walter Murphy, siblings Claudean Chewning and Phyliss Culloty. She is survived by her children Walter Murphy, Martin Douglas Murphy, Laura Pippard and Luanne Skeen, her grandchildren Ashleigh Pippard Wicker, Veronica Pippard, Rhett Pippard, Keeley Murphy, Colton Skeen, Kailyn Murphy and Braden Murphy and her great-grandchildren Archer Wicker and Rebel Wicker as well as her brother in law Jim Murphy and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends made over the years.

A Celebration of Life service is planned for Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 2:00 pm at North Dallas Funeral Home 2710 Valley View Lane Farmers Branch, TX 75234 with a reception to follow at Laura Pippard's home 1211 Grassmere Drive Richardson, TX 75080.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Dallas Animal Shelter 1818 n Westmoreland Road, Dallas, TX 75212 in her name.

The family wishes to thank Guardian Angels care home in Richardson, TX and Three Oaks Hospice for the wonderful care and support that they provided to Beth and her family.
