Obituary

Bette Carline Herod, age 88, died in Irving, Texas, on Thursday, December 28, 2023. Born February 9, 1935, in Tyler, Texas, she lived in Tyler, Canton, Austin, Dallas, and Fort Worth before settling in the city of Irving where she and her husband, William Ira Herod, raised their family. Bette attended the University of Texas in Austin, studying library sciences when she met Bill through mutual friends. They were married on September 2, 1956. She was a loving daughter, sister, niece, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She dedicated her life to God, her Lord Jesus Christ, and in His service. She truly had a servant's heart, and she taught Sunday school to preschool and elementary aged children for decades and also served as women's leader at church. Bette stayed at home with her children through their formative years, then went to work for J.C. Penney to help pay for college when their oldest was preparing to graduate high school. After a couple of years in retail, she landed a job as a clerk at J.A. Majors Company, a medical book distributor, where she made her career working up to manager of the Continuations Department. After twenty-five years, Bette retired and started to homeschool her youngest grandchild fulltime from second grade through seventh grade. Bette loved and took great joy in all of her grandchildren. Survivors include: her brother, Charles Skidmore, and his wife, Nan, in Canton, TX; daughter, Pam Henson, in Blue Springs, MO; son, Cliff Herod, and his wife, Lorena, in Independence, MO; daughter, Julie Skotak, and her husband, Jerry, in Irving, TX; grandchildren, Laura Clute, Michele Holmgren, Jennifer Skotak, Joshua Skotak, and Joseph Skotak; great grandchildren, Anna Clute, Raelynn Clute, El Holmgren, and Alyssa Skotak. Bette was preceded in death by: her father, Carl Skidmore; mother, Christine Skidmore; brother, Robert Skidmore; and husband, William Herod. A memorial service will be planned at a later date when friends and family can gather from out of state. Interment will be at the DFW National Cemetery with her loving husband of sixty-two years. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
