Obituary

Betty Florence Houston Gasch, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on January 7, 2023, after an extended illness. Betty was born in Dallas, TX, on February 3, 1946, the youngest child and only daughter of Florence and L.B. Houston. Betty grew up in Lakewood and attended Dallas public schools, including Woodrow Wilson High School. Betty traveled extensively with her parents during her young adult years and sought adventure beyond Dallas. Her wish was granted in 1970 when she met Kenneth Alden Gasch. They married on December 27, 1971. Kenneth's career in the U. S. Marine Corps took them to Seattle, St. Louis, and San Diego. In 1979, Betty and Kenneth returned to Dallas to Betty's childhood home, where they raised their three sons. Betty was active in the Lakewood community, volunteering at her sons' schools, as an election day worker, and as a neighborhood historian. Betty took great pride in preserving and remembering her father's legacy as Director of Parks for the City of Dallas, and of creating historic overlays to protect her family home and others nearby from being destroyed as Lakewood grew and changed. Betty's and Kenneth's adventures continued in the 1990s, as Kenneth's post-military career took them to Phoenix, AZ, Santa Cruz, CA, Woodbridge, VA, and Edmond, OK. Eventually they returned to their Lakewood home, where they reconnected with old friends and loved getting to know the newer, younger neighbors on the block. Betty's greatest joy came from her family. She was infinitely proud of her children, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, and celebrated their happiness and fulfillment no matter their life's pursuits. Betty had the "gift of gab," never met a stranger, and touched people of all generations and backgrounds with her kindness, humor, wit, and curiosity about their lives. Betty cared for numerous older relatives and was diligent about keeping in touch with friends and family. If she was your friend she was your friend for life. Betty will be treasured, remembered, and sorely missed by her entire family, including her husband of 52 years, Kenneth; their sons, Ken, Bill, and John; daughters-in-law, Erin and Rachel; grandchildren, Zoie, Winston, Tate, Benjamin, Cooper, and Emily; and great grandchildren, Finn and Rayne, by her brothers, Bob and Ben Houston; by her many sisters-in-law who thought of her as a blood sister; and by scores of nieces, nephews, and cousins. A celebration of Betty's life will be held on Saturday, February 18, at 2:00 pm at Bethany Christian Church, 6282 Oram Street, Dallas, TX 75214. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Christian Church, Attn. Beth Durrett, 6282 Oram Street, Dallas, TX 75214 (please note "In memory of Betty Gasch").
