Caldwell
Aug 1, 1939 — Apr 29, 2025
Bettye "Joan" Caldwell, age 85 was born August 1, 1939, to James Buford and Bettye "Geraldine" Burkhalter. With profound sadness, Joan passed away on April 29, 2025 at 2:04 p.m. in Bedford, Texas.
Bettye "Joan" Burkhalter Caldwell was born in Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, Texas, in 1939 and moved to Pasadena, Texas as a young girl with her parents and younger brother, Jimmy where she made lifelong friends. Joan attended Pasadena schools through all 12 grades and graduated as an honor student. Joan was also a member of the National Honor Society. Joan also marched in the band while playing the drums for Pasadena High School. In her senior year, the Pasadena High School band made first place in the national marching band contest in Enid, Oklahoma. The two drummers for Pasadena High School, Joan and her good friend Sally Landon were also chosen as the top two drummers nationally for the national orchestra. Her success in the band led to a scholarship with Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas where she spent a year in college.
Joan Caldwell's journey was marked by love, determination, and adventure. While navigating the challenges of college midterms, she returned home and married her husband, Ronald A. Caldwell, Sr., affectionately known as Blackie. Their whirlwind romance began when Joan returned to Pasadena on a Friday night, celebrated with a wedding shower that weekend, and exchanged vows on Monday evening January 26, 1959 at the Asbury Methodist Church in Pasadena, Texas. Blackie, a proud graduate of Rice University, went on to serve in the Navy, and together they embarked on a remarkable journey around the globe with their three children by their side.
Joan's commitment to education shone brightly as she completed her bachelor's degree in business administration later in life at Dallas Baptist University. Her professional career flourished as she excelled as an accounting manager for Flight Safety International and later for Williamette, a Fortune 500 company, where she ultimately enjoyed a well-deserved retirement. Joan's legacy is one of resilience, love for her family, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge and excellence.
Throughout her life, Joan lived overseas in Japan and Italy, as well as in various states in the northern and western regions of the United States. She had a special fondness for Albuquerque, New Mexico, and had hoped to retire there. However, she ultimately settled in a little town called Euless, Texas, located halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth, where she spent the remainder of her life.
Joan enjoyed playing bridge and actively participated in several groups in the Euless area. Joan was an Episcopalian, she attended church at the Episcopal Church in Bedford, Texas.
Joan was the heart and soul of her family's Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations, where her warmth and hospitality created cherished memories. A passionate cook, constantly exploring new recipes and flavors. In a heartfelt gesture of love, she meticulously compiled a treasured collection of family recipes from Ron's siblings, their spouses and mother, preserving their culinary heritage and ensuring that the legacy of the Caldwell family favorites would live on for generations to come. Joan's gatherings were not just meals; they were joyful celebrations of togetherness.
Joan was a loving wife of 66 years to Ronald A. Caldwell, Sr., proud mother of three children, Ronnie (Mary Ellen), Darin and Kristie (Charlie) and took great pride in her five grandchildren Alexx (Caleb), Clayton (Reagan), Kaytie (Jordan), Coleman and Caroline. She also took great pride in four great-grandchildren Jake, Joseph, John Luke, Levi and a great granddaughter due in October. She cherished every moment spent with her family and was exceptionally proud of all her grandchildren.
Joan led a vibrant life, filled with joy and adventure. Growing up in Pasadena, she formed many lasting friendships and maintained contact with many of her classmates. She attended Pasadena High School reunions whenever possible and loved reconnecting with members of the Class of 1957. Joan often reminisced about her classmates and kept in touch with some of them throughout her travels to Italy and Japan.
Joan Burkhalter Caldwell lived a charmed life and embraced every moment of it. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Joan was surrounded by loved ones through her final days and passed on April 29, 2025.
Joan was preceded in death by her father, James Buford Burkhalter, Sr. in 1968, her mother, Bettye Geraldine "Gerry" Collins Burkhalter in 1996 and her Aunt Lucille Burkhalter Swann in 1988. In her final days she often spoke of her father, her favorite aunt, and her mother. She is now reunited with those she has missed so dearly for so many years.
