Obituary

Charles Rummell "Sy" Symonds, 95, passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2024. He was born on December 7, 1928, in Pampa, Texas, but spent his childhood in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He is now reunited with his beautiful and loving wife Emma Lou, who preceded him to heaven in 2022.

He is survived by his beloved brother and best friend HN Murray Symonds, his three daughters Christy Williams (Blake), Cathey Hand (Charlie), Cha-Cha Bjork (Jon), and his three grandchildren Jack Bjork (Ansley Joy), Chandler Wright (Landon), and Christian Williams. He is survived by eight nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and sisters Jacquelyn Val Johnson Ready and Dyan Webster Agar.

Sy served in the Korean War in the 45th Division. After leaving the Army, he owned several service stations in Oklahoma City. It was at one of those stations that he met his future wife. They married in Oklahoma City in 1956 and came to Dallas in 1957. They moved to University Park and raised their family there.

In 1957, Sy began his highly successful career as a manufacturer's representative for Macklanburg-Duncan, an Oklahoma City company that produces building specialty products. In 1984, he was named to M-D's President's Council and was inducted into the elite Million Dollar Club, recognizing territory managers who had reached $1 million in sales in one year. He went on to be the company's top salesman for a number of years.

Sy was a dedicated family man. He spent many evenings at school, music, sports, Camp Fire Girls and Scouting events. He was thrilled to be a "girls' dad." He taught his daughters and grandchildren that they could do anything they wanted to do, along with many useful driving, handyman and life skills. He was a thoughtful neighbor who would gladly loan his many tools to others who didn't have a fully stocked garage. He loved gadgets and was the first on his block to buy a microwave oven and a trash compactor. He enjoyed cruising around the Park Cities in his red 1973 Cadillac Eldorado convertible, especially on July 4th, with Emma Lou at his side waving to neighbors.

The Symonds family sincerely thanks Sy's caregivers Linda Mapesa and Frida Mbendo and Homage Hospice's nurse Tammy Henderson. A family memorial service will be held in the near future. Memorial contributions may be made to University Park United Methodist Church, 4024 Caruth Blvd., Dallas, Texas, 75225.
