Obituary

Shirley was born in Dallas TX in June of 1935 to James E. Corbitt (deceased) and Mossie Pearl Seahorn Corbitt (deceased). She had one sister, Charline, who married John Rackley, both of whom predeceased her. She graduated from Oak Cliff's Sunset High School in 1953. Shirley is survived by her dear friend Marjorie Buchanan along with her niece, Karen Kline, nephew Eric Boyd, and grandnephew Christopher Boyd. Shirley had an honorable career in Physical Education. She taught biology in both Dallas ISD and Texas A&M while gaining her undergraduate degrees. She completed her doctorate in 1969 from Texas Women's University in Denton. She went on to become a professor at Southern Methodist University for 35 years. During her tenure at SMU, she was the first woman to hold the positions of Director of Athletics and Chairman of P. E. (1977). Shirley always expected the best from people and maintained friendships with both students and colleagues after retirement. Shirley and Margie were professional women who worked hard and played hard. They enjoyed over 20 years of retirement together traveling the world, visiting casinos, and generally having a great time! They loved to cruise and in the wake of every ship, lifetime friendships were formed, too many to count!
