After fighting a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer, Jay Counts passed away October 14, 2013. Born in Los Angeles, CA, to James Curtis Counts and Virginia Shugart Counts January 7, 1948, Jay moved to Dallas to attend SMU and run track in 1965. While at SMU, Jay met Jacquelyn Young who was to become his wife of 41 years. Upon graduating in 1969, Jay entered SMU Law School and received his JD in 1972. Jay started his legal career with the National Labor Relations Board which initiated his 40 year profession in labor and employment law. After three years in Ft Worth, Jay practiced with Fulbright and Jaworski in Washington DC, where they stayed until 1978. They returned to Dallas and Jay went to work for Hewitt, Johnson, Swanson and Barbee, where he remained until 1994. For the past 19 years, Jay has practiced labor law with Littler Mendelson PC of Dallas. Outside of the legal profession, Jay was active in a multitude of community activities. He sat on the board of directors for the Dallas Summer Musicals as well as on numerous boards and committees at Lake Highland United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas in the class of 2004, where he served on the board of the legal committee and on the camp board. Jay was also a past chairman of the Dallas Emmaus Community, where he served on numerous walks, as well as served on board of directors of Feed Lake Highlands. Jay is survived by his wife Jackie Counts, daughters Amy Counts Yates and husband Murphy Yates of Prosper, TX, Maggie Counts Morrow and husband Raymond Morrow of Dallas; grandchildren Taylor, Anna, Tripp and Jack Yates; sisters Carol and Howard Hooper of Palm Desert, CA and Janis and Zeny Ocean of Reno, NV and in-laws Sandy and Randolph Young of El Paso and Betty Ann and Hartley Young of Corsicana, TX and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church at 10:00am, Friday 10/18/13. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, or the Lake Highlands United Methodist Church.
