Obituary

The Reverend Courtland Manning Moore entered the nearer presence of the Lord on May 5, 2024.

Courtland was born on February 22, 1929, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Elizabeth Riggs Moore. He shares his name with his father, who passed away before his birth.

He attended the University of Oklahoma where he was active in the Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Industrial Psychology. He then enrolled in Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkley, California, where he completed his Master of Divinity in 1953. Later that year, he was ordained into the Deaconate and then into the Priesthood.

He served Episcopal parishes in Oklahoma and Texas until 1971, when he was appointed Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of Dallas. During this tenure, he also served as Regional Refugee Field Officer for the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief.

From 1983 to 1994, he was rector of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Arlington, Texas. He also served in leadership roles for the Arlington Ministerial Society, Arlington Charities, Arlington Night Shelter, and the Arlington AIDS Counsel.

After retirement from full-time ministry, he served interim roles in the Diocese of Dallas, including Church of the Annunciation in Lewisville, and Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas. In 2000, he completed his Doctor of Ministry from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. He also served as Canon to the Provisional Bishop of Fort Worth.

In October 2023, he celebrated 64 years of marriage to Barbara Williams Moore. In December 2023, he celebrated the 70th anniversary of his ordination.

Courtland is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter Becky (Rob) Thompson, sons Greg (Gretchen) Moore and Tim (Amy) Moore; and grandchildren John Thompson, Jacob Moore, and Alyssa Moore. He is preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial Service for Courtland is planned for 11:00 am on May 18, 2024, at Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, 14115 Hillcrest Rd, Dallas TX  75254.
