Donald John Jacob Paulin
May 22, 1938 – June 21, 2026
Donald John Jacob Paulin, 88, of Benbrook, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026.
Born in Painesville, Ohio, Donald was the beloved son of Jacob and Esther Paulin. He grew up in a Finnish-speaking household, an upbringing that instilled in him a deep sense of SISU — a Finnish concept embodying resilience, grit, and quiet determination — that would define him for the rest of his life. His early years were shaped by hard work on the family farm and a love of basketball, which he played proudly at Riverside High School.
Donald was gifted both vocally and musically, playing trumpet and cornet with great skill. He attended Kent State before enlisting in the Army, where his talent was put to patriotic use performing in the Army band. He married the love of his life, Roberta “Bertie,” in May 1967 — a partnership that would prove to be the cornerstone of his life. Together they weathered years of Midwest sales work, the opening of two successful automotive parts businesses in Ohio, and a move to Florida before settling in Texas later in life.
A man of tireless work ethic, Donald rarely stopped — holding down his regular job through the week while taking on two or three side jobs on weekends, often with his children drafted into service alongside him. He took immense pride in his Finnish heritage, his accomplishments, and above all, his family. His resolve and determination were matched only by his humor; to see him smile and laugh was to feel joy yourself.
He is survived by his beloved wife Roberta “Bertie” Paulin; his children Kimberly (Luis) Rodriguez, Susan (John) Fleming, Donald E. Paulin, and Holly (Michael) Witherspoon; his granddaughter Olivia Paulin; and many dear friends, nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Irene Nurmi.
A Memorial Service will be held at a date and location to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association — or simply perform an act of kindness in his memory.
He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the love and laughter he brought into our lives.
