Marthelle (Sally) Jones Eatmon passed away on March 27, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. Marthelle was born in McKinney, Texas on August 23, 1921, the beloved only child of Alton Jones and Maude Warden Jones. The family moved to Farmersville, Texas, where she spent her childhood, and returned to McKinney when Marthelle was in her teens. As a young woman, Marthelle attended Baylor University and then moved to Dallas, where she worked at the Mercantile National Bank and met her husband, Buford Eatmon. She had two children and was active in a variety of community organizations. Marthelle was a long-time member of the League of Women Voters. She served as President of the Longfellow Elementary School PTA and on the board of the non-profit Neighborhood Housing Services of Dallas. Marthelle lived through the Great Depression, World War II and the Civil Rights movement, events that helped to form her character. A strong believer in civic engagement, civil rights and social justice, she was proud to live in one of Dallas' first racially integrated neighborhoods. She judged others not "…by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". Marthelle was preceded in death by her husband, Buford J. Eatmon. She is survived by her son, Joel Eatmon, of Dallas, her daughter, Susan Palermo, her son-in-law, Robert Palermo and her grandchildren, Stephen Palermo and Michael Palermo, all of Denver, Colorado. The family would like to thank Renee Simpson, Margaret Dale, and Grace Turner, who cared for Marthelle during the last year of her life. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in Perkins Chapel on the SMU campus. Donations may be made in Marthelle's honor to The League of Women Voters of Dallas.
