Gary Barnes
Duncan
Jan 29, 1957 — Feb 28, 2026
Go rest high on that mountain. Son, your work on earth is done. Gary L. Barnes Duncan 69, passed away peacefully in his Mesquite, TX home after a brief illness with influenza on February 28, 2026. Gary was born on January 29,1957 in Dallas, TX and never moved from the DFW area. Gary started working at the age of 15 and gave 110% at every job he held. He worked in the Office Supply Business for 19 years and all his customers loved him and looked forward to each time he called on them. Gary then decided he would become an Electrician and soon earned his Journeyman License and worked in both residential and commercial roles for the last 31 years. Gary had a hard time retiring and finally decided to retire from DISD after 13 years of service and being honored as a "Shining Star". He looked forward to some well-earned adventures and relaxation with his girlfriend Lisa but sadly passed away the day before. He was known as a dedicated worker, dependable coworker, and someone who inspired others through kindness and hard work.
Gary loved motorcycle racing in his younger years and had a passion for fast fun sports cars like red Corvettes. He still loved listening to heavy metal and classic rock music with some jazz on the side. The outdoors was his favorite place, and he enjoyed camping at the lake on weekends with his girlfriend as well as creating beautiful landscapes. Gary had a special love for animals, especially cats, often taking in strays and caring for birds along his daily travels.
Family and friends remember Gary as a selfless, honest, dependable, and thoughtful man that could always be counted on. He loved all his family, extended family, and friends putting them first, and of course never forgot a birthday or special occasion. Hallmark Cards is going to miss him. Gary quietly supported many charities each month because he believed others needed it more than he did.
Gary was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Barnes, and all his grandparents. He is survived by his partner of 47 years, Lisa Mixon, beloved cat Candy; Father Donald Barnes, stepmother Sandra Barnes, Mother Elizabeth Duncan, stepfather Lester Duncan; and brothers Ross Duncan, Michael Barnes, and Scott Barnes; stepbrother Scott Duncan; nieces and nephews Erin Duncan, Nicole Rikard, and Bradley Duncan; great nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles and many cherished friends.
Gary lit his own way, and a sympathy card shared with me perfectly captured Gary's life:
"There are those who possess a light so bright it not only lights their way but guides others as well. Their light will continue to shine in every heart they touched."
Gary absolutely did not want any celebrations of his life but if you would like to honor Gary, please consider donating in his name to any organization the helps kids, people or animals that need support.
