Obituary

Gene Lee Hammett November 18, 1933 - March 27, 2023 Gene Lee Hammett was born on November 18, 1933 in Yazoo City, Mississippi to Lee Dalton and Emma Jean Hammett, and died in McKinney, Texas on March 27, 2023 at the age of 89. He spent much of his early life on farms in rural Mississippi, but joined the United States Navy at 17 years old as a Seaman Recruit Hospital Corpsman. He rose to the rank of Petty Officer First Class very quickly, and was selected to receive a Commission as an Ensign in the Medical Service Corps as a Hospital Administrator. Over the course of 28 years of Active Duty in the Navy, he served in numerous duty stations throughout the United States and deployed aboard Navy ships (with both US Navy and Marines) around the world. He retired as a Commander. Early in his Navy career, he met his wife, Elizabeth Aylesworth, a Navy nurse, and together they raised their five children; Mark Hammett (68), Patricia Trites (63, deceased), Michael Hammett (64), Paul Hammett (61), and Jean Clarke (59). In 1985, following his career in the Navy, he joined the staff of Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport as an Assistant Administrator. In addition, he served on the faculty of the medical school as an Assistant Professor, teaching Hospital Administration. Over the course of the next 10 years, he rose to CEO of the Medical Center, as well as being promoted on the faculty as an Associate Professor of the Medical School. His work and career were important to him, but the focus and joy of his life was his family. He is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth, and his daughter Pati. He is survived by four children, thirteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. His life has been an inspiration to all who knew him and especially his family.
