George Baumli of McKinney, Texas, passed away on January 10, 2025, at the age of 95 years. George was born in Marble, Colorado on April 9, 1929. He was the youngest of 11 children, all born to Swiss immigrants at home without a doctor. He graduated from High School in Glenwood Springs, Colorado in 1946. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950, serving in the Korean War, and rising in rank from Private to Master Sergeant.
After the Army, he went to the University of Colorado in Boulder, and in 1954, he married Mary Jo Ryden. They had three sons, Greg, Mark, and Chris. He graduated with a BS Degree in Civil Engineering in 1957 and started his professional career working for the California Department of Water Resources in the planning of dams, canals, hydroelectric power, and pumping plants. He spent over 20 years there attaining the rank of Principal Engineer, California's highest Civil Service ranking. George was a Registered Professional Civil Engineer in California and Texas.
Moving from California to El Paso, Texas George spent 10 years as a Principal Engineer with the International Boundary and Water Commission in El Paso, Texas, working on US/Mexico water problems. He returned to California as General Manager of the State Water Contractors, an association that represents 27 Water Districts that buy water from the State Water Project. He retired in 1994 but continued to work, serving as a water consultant for the World Bank helping the Philippine Government set up a water resources planning program.
Upon retirement, George and Mary Jo moved from Folsom, California to McKinney, Texas to be near their grandchildren. The spent their remaining years in McKinney. George and Mary Jo were married 66 ½ years. Mary Jo passed away in 2021. George played golf for several years with a group called "The Romeos", he wrote his autobiography "George's Story", and kept busy with e-mails, visiting the grandchildren and woodworking. In addition to their 3 sons, George and Mary Jo have seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He is survived by all of them. George was cremated with his ashes interred next to Mary Jo's at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery.
