Obituary

George Henry (Hank) Nichols, III died June 11, 2026, in Dallas, Texas.

Hank was born May 27, 1948, in Houston, Texas, to George Henry Nichols, Jr. and Shirley P. Cloyd Nichols. After spending his younger years in Houston, he moved with his parents to San Angelo, Texas where he attended Central High School.

After high school, Hank moved to Marbridge Ranch in Manchaca, Texas, and then to Dallas where he lived with good friends at Storey Lane Independent Living condos (SLIL). Hank worked in various positions for 34 years at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center until he retired.

Hank was a devoted member of St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church and also active at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He enjoyed serving as an acolyte at both churches and participating in silent retreats. He joined in several groups: Bible Study, the Men of St. Michael's, and the Primetimers.

Hank enthusiastically participated in many activities offered through the SLIL community, including bowling, going to the "picture shows", water aerobics at the YMCA, and outings around Dallas. He had many favorite restaurants and loved eating out. He also enjoyed watching TV and was especially fond of re-runs from the 196o's and classic sitcoms. Hank loved welcoming friends into his condominium and spending time with them.

Hank was famous for his remarkable memory for numbers. He could recall the birthdays of numerous family members and friends, phone numbers dating back to the 1950s, addresses where relatives had lived, and television and radio station numbers throughout Texas. He had a unique sense of humor and was delighted in teasing and joking with others. Many affectionately referred to it as "Hank humor."

Over the years, Hank enjoyed traveling with his father. Hank loved to travel by Amtrak trains because he could walk around and make friends. During the last twenty-five years of his life, after reconnecting with the Nichols cousins, he regularly visited family for Christmas celebrations in Austin and Jonestown and became the chief instigator of cousin reunions in several Texas towns. He especially loved watching the younger generations of cousins open gifts and enjoy time together.

Hank was preceded in death by his parents George and Shirley Nichols, his grandparents G.H. and Rosalie Nichols, William and Joe Cloyd; aunts and uncles Emmett and Enid Nichols, Ralph and Hazel Nichols, William Preston and Delores Cloyd; and cousin's spouse Harriet Cloyd.

He is survived by first cousins and spouses: Bill and Sheila Nichols, Bob and Karen Nichols, Pat Nichols Newman and husband Dean Newman, Kathy Nichols and husband David Pimentel, and Preston Cloyd. Hank was also close to many members of the next generations of his extended family, who will remember him fondly, including Laurin Pimentel and daughter Abi Donnelly; and Andrea Polinsky and husband Mark. He was also survived by the children and grandchildren of Bill and Sheila Nichols, Bob and Karen Nichols, and Preston and Harriet Cloyd from Louisiana.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Stephanie Brown, supervisor at SLIL, for her on-going friendship and dedicated care for Hank, especially in his last month of life. They also thank the Reverend Robin Hinkle, Associate for Pastoral Care at St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church, for visiting and sitting with Hank in his final days.

A memorial service will be scheduled in the coming weeks at St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, 8011 Douglas Ave, Dallas, TX 75225.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Storey Lane Independent Living (www.SLILdfw.org), St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church (https://www.saintmichael.org/give/), St. Luke's Episcopal Church - Dallas (https://www.stlukesdallas.org/Give), or Shriners Children's (https://donate.shrinerschildrens.org/give/), a favorite charity of Hank's.
