Obituary

Gil passed away on Saturday August 5, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on the family farm in Montague County, Texas on the 16th of February 1931 to Rosa Lee Cantrell Adams and Benjamin M. Adams. He grew up primarily until the age of 12 with his grandmother, Lena Wharton Cantrell, and was known as "Gib". In 1942, he and his mother moved to Austin, Texas and there while Rosa Lee attended and graduated The University of Texas' Nursing School. In 1944, they moved to Worchester, Massachusetts where Gil was known as "Tex" during high school. Gil returned to Texas in 1951 to attend NTAC/Arlington Junior College, now The University of Texas at Arlington, playing basketball and joining the ROTC program. In 1954, he graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in petroleum engineering and married the love of his life, Elaine Keith, on April 10, 1954. They lived in Denver, Colorado, and Sumter, South Carolina while Gil served in the Air Force. In 1956, the couple moved to Mount Vernon, Ohio, as Gil began his career in the "oil business", working for Cooper Bessemer. Their first daughter, Kimberley Anne, was born there, just prior to the family relocating to New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1960, Leslie Sheryl (Sheri), joined the family. Many enjoyable years were spent on the family boat, fishing, waterskiing, crabbing, and watching pirogue races. In 1968, Gil was overseeing sales for the North Sea and Middle East for Cooper Bessemer which meant a move to London, England for he and the family. While the family lived in London, he was traveling to Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia before they became the hotspots of today. Gil never met a stranger and enjoyed spending time with people of various cultures and faiths and developed lifelong friendships. The family had a memorable road trip in their vintage Jaguar across Europe one Christmas, including picnics in the snow, "stinky feet" cheese in Dijon, France, canals in Venice, and Oberammergau, Germany. All too soon, in 1970, Gil's work with Cooper Bessemer brought the family back to the States to Houston, Texas. A new family boat had the family waterskiing and fishing as a group with friends of the girls and Gil and Elaine. Cooper Airmotive asked Gil to work for them in 1976, so the family moved to Dallas. After leaving Cooper, Gil was involved in various entrepreneurial activities, finally, working and retiring from National Teachers Associates Life Insurance Company ("NTA"). He worked for NTA for over 20 years until the age of 83! Gil was always a hard worker and a people person. Even in "retirement", he did not quit working. He worked for Sheri as her legal assistant and around the house, mowing the yard until just recently. Gil was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Rosa Lee, and by his beloved wife, Elaine. He is survived by his daughters, Kimberley Adams McDarty and Leslie Sheryl "Sheri" Adams; his son-in-law (aka Hunting Buddy), Les McDarty; his granddaughters, Leah McDarty and Hannah McDarty Sears; his grandson-in-law, Tucker Blayde Sears; and by his cousins, Mary Lynette Blaha, Marvin Adams, Letha Strain and Pat Leverett. In lieu of flowers to honor Gil's memory, the family asks that you treat others you encounter with kindness, even if it is only with a smile. You never know how much your kindness can affect others. If you want to make a monetary donation in his memory, the family asks that you donate to a cause that raises people or animals up by assisting veterans, rescuing animals, feeding the food insecure, providing shelter or job training, providing medical care, to name just a few worthy causes.
