Lainey Moria Grace (born Phyllis Elaine Grabey) was born Oct 12, 1952 in Chester, PA.. She passed away suddenly on January 12, 2014 of pulmonary thrombosis. She is survived by her loving life partner of 26 years, Harriet Cohen; her parents, the Reverend Earl and Lois Grabey, her sister Carol Galloway, her brother Jerry Grabey, nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, and many other loving family and friends in Dallas, Atlanta, and throughout the United States. Throughout Lainey's short life, she brought love, laughter, hope, and support to many. As a young adult, Lainey found her calling in healing, a theme that she wove throughout her life. Her first career was in nursing, working with older adults, people struggling with addictions, and in infection control. Because of a traumatic brain injury 18 years ago, Lainey could no longer practice nursing. She explored new spiritual paths and cognitive wellness. As was her nature, Lainey found new meaning for her life in the adversity. During this period of transition, Lainey legally changed her name to Grace, reflecting her newfound expression for personal, spiritual and professional development. Lainey became a gifted massage therapist and massage therapy instructor, channeling her healing energy into her work. Paradoxically, the head injury awakened her gifts as a creative artist, which she pursued in her own artwork and her work facilitating mandala sessions for people with brain injuries. As part of her commitment to lifelong self-discovery and personal growth, Lainey shared her spiritual gifts with others, as a facilitator, educator and group leader. Most recently, Lainey has been actively involved in the HeartPaths community, as a seeker and spiritual director. People may remember Lainey as facilitator of interfaith theoretical reflection groups, co-host with Harriet of their Friday night Jewish - Episcopal inclusive language, welcoming Shabbat dinners, or trainer in the psycho-spiritual educational sessions that challenged participants to think outside of the box. Some may remember Lainey as a remarkable massage therapist and healer, the person who could calm any infant (and new mother) with words or hugs, or facilitator of The Way. Others may remember her for her personal artwork, or her encouraging words to those who claimed a lack of creativity. Lainey's gifts were numerous - compassion, hospitality, generosity, empathy and others. She provided physical and spiritual healing to many. The light of her soul is reflected in the lives of everyone who knew her. Although she is no longer physically with us, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched and who touched her. A memorial service will be held at 4:00pm at the Church of the Transfiguration, located at 14115 Hillcrest Road, Dallas, Texas, 75254. Another gathering and service known as a shiva minyan (a Jewish mourning ritual) will take place at 7:00pm at the home of Debbie and John Wills (Harriet's sister and Lainey's sister in law and brother in law) in North Dallas.
