Gregory Eugene
Smith, Dds.
Jan 5, 1957 — Jun 21, 2025
Gregory Eugene Smith passed away on June 21, 2025 in the arms of the Lord, and his loving family, ending a private and courageous 4-year battle with metastatic cancer. Born on January 5, 1957 in Dallas, Texas, Greg was an only child to Donald Eugene Smith and Janie Marie Smith (nee' Gregory).
Raised in Garland, Texas, Greg attended North Garland High School. He studied chemistry at Stephen F. Austin University and received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1983. His career in dentistry spanned 42 years, retiring on June 1, 2025. His professional legacy is one of kindness, humility and excellence in patient care, a philosophy and approach that continues in his practice, now operated by his son Matthew G. Smith, DDS.
On September 27, 1986 Greg married Patti Baker-Wade, at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas. They resided in East Dallas, raising their children Michelle and Matthew in Lake Highlands.
A beloved son, husband, father and grandfather (known affectionately as "Doc" to his grandchildren), Greg is remembered as an encourager and a mentor. A true southern gentleman; he was warm, kind, caring and loving. He was a very good listener. Spending time with Greg made anyone feel like they mattered. His wit and humor were entertaining, his humility endearing.
A gifted guitar player, Greg played with the Remedy Band for 27 years, and served with Patti in music ministries at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church and Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church, for a combined 20 years.
Greg is preceded in death by his father, Donald E. Smith, of Garland, Texas.
He is survived by his mother Janie Marie Smith of Garland; his loving wife Patti; his children Michelle Elizabeth Cunningham (Chris); and Matthew Gregory Smith (Hannah); grandchildren Chloe Emersyn Cunningham and Callen Lane Cunningham; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation for the superb care and respect given to Greg throughout his illness by the staff at Texas Oncology, the Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center, Baylor Scott and White Hospital Dallas, and T. Boone Pickens Hospital, 6th floor. A special thank you to Kartik Konduri, MD; Derek Chui, MD; and Newton Pittman, RN.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on August 02, 2025 at 11:00 am in the Great Hall at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church, located at 9015 Plano Rd, Dallas, TX. 75238.
