Dr. David Hammel, long-time resident and former Mayor of Parker, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2015. He was born in Waverly, Iowa, on January 1, 1938, and raised on the family's farm. David is preceded in death by his parents, Wanda McDonald Hammel and Fred Hammel, and his brother, Gene Hammel. David is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Genie Hammel, their son, Scott Hammel, his wife Lisa and their son, Christopher; daughter, Kristen Hammel Amen, her husband Matt and their children Hallie and Colby; daughter Lisa Hammel Fogle, her husband Eric and their children Zachary and Emily; brother, Michael Hammel, sister-in-law Ronna and their children; sister-in-law, Carolyn and their children; and his faithful dog, Buddy the Boxer, and his horses. David received his Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, and Ph.D. in Engineering, all from the University of Arizona, and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force. He worked for Kennecott Copper Company in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Morrison-Knudsen, in Boise Idaho, before moving to Texas where he worked for Phillips Coal Company and retired after 20 years. David was a long-time member of Plano Rotary Club, Board Chair for CITY House, member of the Collin County Youth Charity Advisory Board and the Collin County Planning Board, served as a City Council member and Mayor of the City of Parker, and served as a Trustee for Collin College. He also worked on the Governor's Task Force to develop energy policy for Texas. Besides his wife and family, David's love was his horse breeding farm, Wind Dream Arabians. His horses brought him great joy and won many honors, including U.S. and Canadian National Championships. Please join us in sharing our precious memories of our beloved David at a memorial service celebrating his life at 2:00pm on July 12, 2015, at the Unity Church of Dallas, 6525 Forest Lane.
