Obituary

John J. Hammonds, 92, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2013 at San Remo, a loving nursing home, in Richardson, TX where he had resided for the past two and a half years. John was born April 1, 1921 in Columbia, TN. He attended High School in Marlin, TX where he was a member of the varsity football team. While working in El Paso, TX, he met, fell in love with and married Lydia Barbary May 22, 1942. Inducted in the Army in May 1945, he served in combat during World War II and Korea and was awarded the Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal. Serving in various positions in the Army, including being stationed in Germany, he retired in 1965 at Ft Bliss in El Paso as a Major with 23 years of service. After retiring from the Army, he worked for Lone Star Beer before starting a wholesale food business in El Paso, John Hammonds Specialty Foods. John was an avid golfer and member of Coronado Country Club where he served as a Board Member. He had lived in Dallas for the past ten years. John was preceded in death by Lydia Barbary Hammonds, his loving wife for 56 years. He is survived by children John Hammonds Jr., Kathleen Champney and Donna Searls, daughter in law Virginia Hammonds and son in law Robert Champney, five grandchildren; John Hammonds III, Catherine Copleland, Todd Champney, Tatum Tuthill and Ashley Searls Hudson and nine great grandchildren. A family service was held in Dallas, TX.
