James Edward Hanvey, Jr., 65, of Richardson, TX, peacefully let go of his long and brave struggle on June 4, 2017. He died at home surrounded by his family. James was a beloved daddy, granddaddy, husband, brother, and friend. He was profoundly kind and abundantly generous and will be deeply missed by all who love him. A mass in celebration and remembrance of his life will be held June 24, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas where he and his wife, Emogene, were married and remained members. Interment in the church's columbarium will take place immediately after the service, and a reception for family and friends will follow in the tower cloister. James was born in Dallas to James Edward Hanvey, Sr., and Naoma Turner Hanvey on November 3, 1951. He graduated from Bryan Adams High School in 1970 and still enjoyed gathering with his classmates until the end of his life. He went on to attend Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, and later graduated from both Texas State Technological Institute and the University of Texas at Arlington. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and affiliated with chapters at both Centenary and UTA. A lifetime automotive buff, James restored several vehicles to pristine condition, including his father's 1952 Ford F1 pickup, which became one of his proudest accomplishments. He was a long-time member of the Dallas Early Ford V8 Club and a camping enthusiast. He was also known for his ability to build or fix anything and was always working on a project. James spent his career as a civil engineer, working for Dallas Power & Light (TXU) from 1980 to 1995, and later retired from the City of The Colony in 2012 as a result of his ongoing illness. He was diagnosed with cutaneous lymphoma in 2010 and underwent a stem cell transplant in 2012. He developed graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) a few months after the transplant, which led to other health complications. James is preceded in death by his parents. Surviving family include his loving children, Lauren Tune and her husband Peyton, of Phoenix, AZ, Lindsey Benjamin and her husband Brad, of Willow Park, TX, and Jonathan Hanvey of Richardson, TX. James is also survived by his wife whom he adored, Emogene Hanvey of Richardson, his step-daughter, Lindsay Liles of Portland, OR, his grandchildren, Madelyn and Mackenzie Benjamin of Willow Park, his sister, Edna Harrison and her husband Richard, of Dallas, TX, as well as his niece, Morgan Harrison of Dallas, and his first wife and mother of his children, Jane Phillips of Granbury, TX. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Faith Presbyterian Hospice and the clergy and lay ministers of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. Special thanks is also given to the numerous doctors and medical team members who cared for James and to his stem cell donor, Claudia, who gave him five wonderful years of life.
