Hayward T
Mcmurray Jr.
Jan 16, 1938 — Mar 7, 2025
Hayward T. McMurray, Jr. graced our lives from January 16, 1938, until his peaceful passing on March 7, 2025. Born in Springfield, Illinois, to Hayward Thomas McMurray Sr. and Isabelle Bernice Hayer McMurray, Hayward lived a life rich in love, service, and unwavering dedication to the community.
Hayward devoted over 4,000 hours to delivering "Meals on Wheels," embodying the spirit of compassion for the less fortunate. His generous heart further shone brightly through his years volunteering at Presbyterian Hospital, where he brought joy and comfort to patients by delivering flowers. A steadfast member of Lions Club International, Hayward spent decades championing the famous eyeglass program in the Dallas/White Rock area. With meticulous care, he assessed countless pairs of eyeglasses, preparing them for shipment to those in need. Each bag he filled was a testament to his commitment to helping others see the world more clearly.
Hayward's life was truly inspiring, blending his deep faith with a commitment to giving back. As a cherished member of Highland Park United Methodist Church since 1955, he poured his heart into his community, even composing 13 beautiful hymns that touched lives during services. While pursuing his education at Southern Methodist University, he balanced his studies and his passion for music, earning both a B.S. and an M.S. His dedication didn't go unnoticed—on February 3, 2009, he was honored with the prestigious "M" award, a testament to his incredible contributions to the university.
Hayward also proudly served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1962, exemplifying the values of duty and honor. His legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and a profound commitment to uplifting those around him.
Those who will fondly remember Hayward include his sister, Carolyn Marshall from Indianapolis, Indiana, and his twin sister, Margaret Fletcher of Santa Rosa, California. He is also cherished by three nieces, a nephew, extended family, his loving church community, and a host of wonderful friends. Hayward's memory will surely live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A funeral service celebrating Hayward's remarkable life will be held on March 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM in the Cox Chapel of Highland Park United Methodist Church. He will be laid to rest with his family in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, IL.
In honor of Hayward's memory, donations can be made to the Night Owls at HPUMC, ensuring that his legacy of service and love endures.
Let us carry forward Hayward's light, reminding us that every act of kindness, no matter how small, can change the world.
