John Walton Hicks, Jr. of Dallas died peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 surrounded by loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 64 years, Sandra McPherson Hicks. John is predeceased by his father John Walton Hicks, mother Annie Stegman Hicks, and beloved sister Doris Hicks Redding. He is survived by his three children and their spouses: John Hicks (Leigh Ann), Michael Hicks, and Ruth Ann Hicks Elmore (John); nine beloved grandchildren and their spouses: Anna Hicks (Craig Bjoda), Molly Hicks Quirk (Rob), George Hicks, Jennifer Hicks Lopez (Toby), Garrett Hicks (Millie), Steven Hicks (Sloane), Emily Elmore Chow (Kevin), Ben Elmore (Faith), and John Elmore; and eight precious great-grandchildren: Claire Quirk, Colin Bojda, Greer Bojda, Larkin Bojda, Oliver Chow, Fitz Elmore, Vivien Lopez, and Elliott Hicks; plus three that he just missed getting the chance to hold and love, Magnolia Elmore, Evelyn Chow, and Locke Hicks. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Phil Redding, brother-in-law Perry McPherson (Ann), as well as his nieces and nephews Lynn McPherson Bucknall (Chris), Eddie McPherson (Karen), Ann Redding McManus (Mike) and Phillip Redding (Kim). They will all miss him deeply. John was born on August 7, 1933 in Dallas, Texas. He grew up in the Lakewood neighborhood and was a proud 1950 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. The highlight of his time at Woodrow was traveling to Mexico City to play in an exhibition football game against a local team (alas, the Wildcats lost). John attended Southern Methodist University and pledged Kappa Sigma, graduating with a bachelor of business administration in 1955. He then received his J.D. from SMU School of Law in 1959 where he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. John was a partner for many years with Bergman and Hicks before joining Turner, Hitchins, McInerney, Webb & Hartnett. He was admitted before the United States Supreme Court and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He loved the law and its practice. He met the love of his life, Sandra McPherson, at a wedding while in law school. They were married on December 23, 1955 at Highland Park Presbyterian Church and in record time had three children. John was an avid outdoorsman; he hunted, fly fished, and camped throughout Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Alaska with his treasured family and friends. He was a huge fan of the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, and his SMU Mustangs. John had two secret artistic talents: painting and drawing from nature and writing Cowboy Poetry. John loved his dogs - Pepper, Scout, Sport, Spice, and most of all Sugar - the "best dog in the world." He and Sandra traveled to Spain, Switzerland, Costa Rica, England, and throughout the United States. Most of all, he loved spending summers in Colorado with Sandra, his children and beloved grandchildren, and they will forever cherish the memories of time spent there with him. In 2001, he and Sandra retired and moved to Hideaway, Texas where they made a host of new friends. In Hideaway, John was president of his Sunday school class and a faithful member of Hideaway Kiwanis. He and Sandra moved back to Dallas in 2017 to be closer to family and old friends. John demonstrated his leadership in a quiet manner, leading by example. He exhibited daily that the best thing a man can do for his children is to love their mother, and John loved Sandra. There will be a private family internment at Highland Park Presbyterian Church on November 1, 2019 with Rev. Molly Jones officiating.
