Obituary

Jesse Dwayne Matheny, born September 21, 1940 met his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on February 10, 2023 and was reunited with the love of his life, Kathleen Eugenia (Fancil) Matheny. Jesse graduated from Oblong (Illinois) Township High School in 1958. He & Kathleen were married January 1, 1961.

Over the course of his life, Jesse worked in many vocations from his uncle's service station (Matheny Standard Service Station, Oblong) to brakeman and locomotive engineer at Bethlehem Steel prior to moving to Texas in 1972. In Texas, Jesse work primarily for freight companies in various capacities until his retirement from Federal Express after 20+ years of loyal service. He enjoyed his retirement with Kathleen, traveling around the country visiting relatives and attending school reunions. In retirement he occasionally worked for the Wise County Messenger where he made lasting friendships. He was a long-time member & deacon at Living Word Assembly of God Church in Alvord, Texas. After suffering a stroke in 2017, Jesse moved to Dallas near his son and spent most of his final years under the wonderful care of Juliette Fowler Communities. Jesse was known as a smiling man who was always friendly with a kind and uplifting word to everyone and sharing his rock-solid belief "Jesus is Lord & God is in control".

Jesse was preceded in death by his sweetheart Kathleen (Fancil) Matheny (2010) and his parents Ira and Edytha (Carter) Matheny. He is survived by his children: Timothy (Lisa), Denise (Perry) Robinson, Trevor (Andrea) and Danielle (David) Small; his grandchildren: Andrew (Yatzil), Victoria (Xavier), Margaret, Benjamin, Lane (Madison), Paige, Ryan, Nathan, Kylei, & Dillan; his great grandchildren: Leo and Murphy; his brothers: Stanley (Beverly) Matheny and Truman (Sharon) Matheny as well as numerous nieces & nephews.

Jesse was cremated and his remains will be interred at a later date at Sunset Cemetery, Sunset, TX.
