Obituary

It is with great sorrow and enduring love that we remember the life of Johanna Marie Wise, 54, who left us far too soon on December 19th, 2025. Johanna was born in Bangor, Maine to Dr. Joe and Katherine Wise.

From her youngest days, she possessed a rare blend of creativity and analytical brilliance, tuning the family piano by ear and acquiring the cello because of its resemblance to the human voice. She went on to devote her life to performance and became an accomplished cellist, maintaining the distinction of performing in the Bangor Symphony Orchestra before graduating from Bangor High School.

Her talents admitted her to the prestigious Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she studied under eminent figures such as János Starker and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. A masterful performance of Haydn's demanding Cello Concerto No. 1 represented the culmination of her studies there, and she was accepted at the Boston Conservatory. She later attained an MBA and began pursuit of a PhD in Healthcare Management.

Johanna was a lifelong learner who embodied cultural and intellectual curiosity. As a prolific world-traveler, she made friends from all walks of life, welcoming others with warmth, humor, and an open heart. Many will remember her for her kindness and generosity, always willing to share her time, her talents, and her compassion.

The tenacity with which Johanna took on challenges throughout her life was an inspiration to those that knew her. An illness in early childhood often left her bedridden; leaving Nugget, the family's Golden Retriever, to serve as her sentinel when she experienced these health episodes. A traffic collision at the age of 12 miraculously abated these difficulties, a sign that Johanna had so much more to show the world. She defied expectations about her condition, later having two sons, Andrew and Daniel, who hope to carry on her passion and generosity of spirit.

Above all, she will be remembered as a strong-willed, kind and generous soul—someone who cared deeply, gave freely, and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her music, her intellect, her laughter, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who loved her. Though her time with us was far too short, her life was deeply meaningful, and her legacy will endure.

Johanna is survived by her father, Joe; sons, Andrew and Daniel; sister, Elizabeth; and brother, Jonathan.
