Joseph Alexander Wilson Wells died peacefully in his home after a winter of battling esophageal cancer and its complications. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He deeply loved his wife Jane and his family.
Joe was born on October 20, 1936 in Roanoke, Virginia. He grew up in Staunton, Virginia and was educated in the Staunton School System and Bullis Preparatory School in Silver Spring, Maryland. In 1958 he graduated from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. While at Duke he was active in ROTC and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
After graduating from Duke he spent three years in the United States Air Force stationed in Belleville, IL and Wichita, Kansas. He was the Base Communications Officer at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita from November 1958 to August 1961.
Following his years in the Air Force, he was employed by General Electric Company for thirty-one years working in the Communications Division in Lynchburg, Virginia and Aerospace Division in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. While working for GE, he and his family lived inVirginia, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Florida, back to Virginia and finally Dallas, Texas. His work with GE required both Domestic and European travel. After his retirement from GE he did consulting work for SCI in Huntsville, Alabama. He also worked for his daughter in her Computer business.
For a number of years Joe worked the sound desk at his church for the 5:30 PM service on Saturday. He enjoyed working Sudoku and Crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed working with stained glass, good conversation with family and friends, travel, golf and music. When he was a young boy he sang in the Boys Choir at Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton and he was also active in their Boy Scout Program.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Walter Wells, his brother and sister-in-law Walter Jr. and Beverly Wells and his son-in-law David Hammon. He is survived by his wife, Jane, daughters Donna Pizarro (Don), and Debbie Hammon, granddaughters Audrey Leggett (Taylor) and Lindy Hammon and great grandchildren Nyla Edwards and Charles Leggett, and his sister Carolee Wells Henney (Fred) and a number of nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 2:00 PM at the Episcopal Church of The Transfiguration, 14115 Hillcrest Road, Dallas 75254.
In lieu of flowers a memorial gift may be given to the Endowment Fund of the Episcopal Church of The Transfiguration, 14115 Hillcrest Road, Dallas, TX 75254.
