Carrie 'Joyce' Hughes Roberts was born in Valley View, Texas February 2, 1935 to Joe and Rebecca Hughes. She peacefully passed away in Plano, Texas on January 11, 2018.
After graduating from Gainesville High School in 1953, Joyce left Gainesville to be a flight attendant for American Airlines, where she met her husband, Haydn "Rosie" Roberts. Their friends said it was a perfect match as Joyce loved to cook and Haydn loved to eat. They married in Nashville, Tennessee in 1962, but kept it a secret for several months since at that time flight attendants were not allowed to be married.
They moved to Dallas where they raised their daughters, Lisa and Libby. Once their daughters were in school, Joyce returned to work as a life insurance underwriter for Members Mutual Life Insurance where she worked until her early retirement in 1985. She then had plenty of time to focus on traveling with Haydn and on being a hands on grandmother to Rebecca, Sarah, Joseph and Vaughn.
She taught us all to garden, to cook, to love great literature and art, and served as a role model for her daughters and granddaughters, demonstrating that you could love and care for your family while still having a career. She taught her children and grandchildren to be strong, self-reliant and how to be your own person while still valuing the strength that comes from family support - even if you didn't always agree with them. She possessed a tenderness that was often masked by toughness, except when her grandchildren and great grandchildren were around. She had a wonderful life and we will miss her greatly.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Haydn Roberts, daughter, Lisa Roberts Emmons and husband Stephen Emmons, daughter Libby Roberts Camp, grandchildren Rebecca Emmons and husband Tomas Echiburu, Sarah Emmons Hobizal and husband David Hobizal, Joseph Emmons and fiancée Stephanie Lesko, and Vaughn Camp, great grandchildren Samuel Oddo Emmons and Pastor Echiburu Emmons, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her mother Rebecca Flowers, step-father Homer Flowers, father Joe Hughes, brothers Bobby Hughes, Billy Hughes and sister Peggy Lemons.
