Obituary

Kathy Calhoun, a devoted educator, faithful community leader, beloved wife and mother, and proud lifelong Texan, passed away on October 4, 2026, at the age of 81.

Born in Fort Stockton, Texas, on November 8, 1944, Kathy carried throughout her life a deep love of learning, history, service, and community. She attended Austin College, where she earned her degree and prepared for what would become a long and meaningful career in education.

In 1967, Kathy married the love of her life, Jim. Together, they shared 59 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, commitment, family, and the many experiences they shared along the way.

Kathy dedicated much of her professional life to teaching, touching the lives of thousands of students over the course of her career. She spent the majority of those years at W.E. Greiner Middle School, where she taught U.S. and Texas history. More than simply teaching dates and events, Kathy had a gift for helping her students understand the people and stories behind history. Her dedication, knowledge, and genuine care for her students left an impression that extended far beyond the classroom.

Her commitment to serving others was also deeply reflected in her faith. Kathy was an active and respected leader within the Unitarian Universalist community, serving as president of both the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Oak Cliff and the Southwest Unitarian Universalist District. She was also a longtime and cherished member of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas. Through her leadership and involvement, Kathy gave generously of her time, wisdom, and heart, living out her values through service to others.

Those who knew Kathy will remember not only what she accomplished, but the lasting difference she made in the lives around her as a wife, mother, teacher, leader, friend, and mentor.

Kathy is survived by her beloved husband, Jim Calhoun; her sons, Daniel Calhoun and Glen Calhoun; as well as her extended family, dear friends, former students, and members of her faith community. Her influence lives on in the countless people she taught, encouraged, served, and loved throughout her life.

Kathy’s life was one of learning, service, devotion, and connection, and her memory will be carried forward with deep gratitude and affection by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
