Kay Mairs, also known as "Katy-broom" and "KK" to her grandchildren, went to Heaven November 26, 2023, at her home in Dallas, Texas. The peace of the Lord came early that morning as a flight of doves gathered on her eldest daughter's lawn. Kay was surrounded by family and friends at Thanksgiving and her daughters were by her side as she passed into her new life. Kay was born on May 3, 1937, in El Dorado, Kansas, to Ivan Allen and Lottie Estella (Wolf) Smith.
She attended El Dorado High School where she was football queen, played the bassoon, and started dating Tom Mairs. She attended Washburn University, and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Dolphin Swimming Club and Junior Pep Club. Kay and Tom were married June 14, 1958, while he was completing his Masters of Geology at the University of Oklahoma. They moved to Dallas in 1974 and joined the Church of the Incarnation. Kay was an active member and found great solace and strength there. Kay enjoyed attending Lessons & Carols and was a regular attendee at the Bach Society.
She loved taking walks in the Arboretum and had a deep appreciation for literature and the arts. Kay cherished spending time with her family and hosting her legendary Christmas Eve party. She and Tom shared a passion for traveling, golf trips, and learning about their family history. Kay also had a keen interest in art, particularly landscapes of California.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Tom Mairs, her infant sister, Janice, brothers Richard and Roger, and her loyal dog, Scooter. She is survived by her daughters, Stacey Rauscher and Jennifer Perkins, and by her son-in-law Tim Perkins; her grandchildren: Abigail (Nick) Backlund, Jeffrey (Callee) Perkins, William Perkins, Cole Rauscher, and Kathryn Rauscher; her great-grandson BeauxBeaux Backlund; nephews: Mike (Connie) Mairs, Cliff (Madonna) Smith and Michael Smith; nieces Michelle Daniels, Kristi Smith, Julie (John) Markovich, Laura (John)Williams and Pamela Smith; cousins Marylee (Tim) Strange and Ann (Craig) McBride; sister-in-law Mary Smith; and Kay's faithful canine, Daisy.
Kay will be remembered for her wisdom and kind heart, her creamy pralines, her love for her family and friends, and her zest for life. She leaves a legacy of warmth, generosity and love that will be cherished by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Kays life Friday, January 5th, 11am, in Memorial Chapel at Church of the Incarnation, 3966 McKinney Avenue, Dallas, TX 75204. Parking located on the southeast (Central-75) side of campus. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Kays memory to the Church of the Incarnation, the Dallas Arboretum, or the charity of your choice. May perpetual light shine upon her!
