Lawrence "Larry" Jay
Benson
Jun 1, 1945 — Mar 16, 2025
Lawrence Jay "Larry" Benson, born on June 1, 1945, in El Paso, Texas, entered eternal rest on March 16, 2025, at the age of 79, in Dallas, Texas. Larry's life was one of adventure, passion, and heartfelt connections with those he loved.
Larry is survived by his daughter, Ashlee Benson of Dallas, Texas, and his nephew, Robert Wesley "Wes" Benson II, and niece, Chana Orozco, both of El Paso, Texas. He is reunited in Eternity with his son, Brett Jay Benson; his brother, Robert Wesley "Wes" Benson; and his parents, Robert J. "Bob" Benson and Catherine Jane (Jane) Benson (née Wilson).
Larry's life began in El Paso, where he graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School and later earned his degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. Throughout his life, Larry lived in various places, including New Mexico and Louisiana, but Texas always held a special place in his heart. He delighted in the bold flavors of Cajun and Santa Fe-style Mexican cuisines, though nothing could compare to his all-time favorite—El Paso-style Mexican food. Larry had an adventurous spirit and a love for life's simple pleasures.
A lifelong enthusiast of all things Chevrolet, Larry poured his heart into the automotive world. As the owner of a Chevrolet dealership, a seller of vehicle customizations, and a skilled restorer of classic 1950s and 1960s Chevrolets, his passion for cars ran deep. His love for drag racing led him to countless racetracks, where he not only reveled in the thrill of competition but also built lasting friendships with fellow racers.
Larry had the remarkable ability to connect with anyone, never meeting a stranger, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Larry had a special bond with animals, particularly cats, earning him the affectionate title of "cat whisperer" as he had a way of making any feline feel safe and loved in his presence.
Larry's family and friends meant everything to him. His memory will forever be cherished, and his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched with his kindness and love.
We know you are now resting in paradise with Eternal Love, Larry. You will forever be in our hearts.
A memorial service to celebrate Larry's life will be held at 11 AM on Friday, March 28, 2025, at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 6411 Lyndon B Johnson Fwy, Dallas, TX 75240.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Maricats Rescue would be greatly appreciated.
