Lois Gossett died peacefully at home on July 28, 2023 at 96 years old. She was born on June 30, 1927 in a farmhouse located in Wheeler County to Opal (Wright) and J.L. Polk. She attended schools in Allison, Texas and Reydon, Oklahoma and went on to graduate from college with BS and Masters degrees at West Texas State in Canyon. She worked as a hostess in the restaurant at the DeSoto Hotel one summer where she met Oran Gossett. They married in November 22, 1947 In Des Moines, New Mexico and had two children, Lorilann (Lolly) Gossett of Dallas, and Charles (Scott) Gossett of Plano.
While attending college, Lois began teaching in Coldwater in a two-room school, as a temporary teacher, when the school lost their teacher in the middle of the school year. She fell in love with this profession and later taught all levels within the Dalhart School system over a 30 + year span, including teaching several generations of families in Dalhart. She held many, many fold memories of teaching and watching children learn and grow.
Lois had a giving spirit and deeply loved her family. She spent many hours supporting the community at St. James and in Dalhart as a volunteer on various committees. During the summer months, she loved traveling and drove on many road trips from coast to coast across the U.S. She maintained a loving, sweet spirit throughout her life and will be dearly missed by her family.
Lois is survived by her children, Lolly and Scott, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother and wife, Bob and Linda Polk, and sister and husband, Maxine and Norman Christy.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life at St. James Anglican Church in Dalhart on November 4th at 10am. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to:
