Obituary

Although Lue Low White was a university graduate, educator and entrepreneur, her fondest wish was to be a superlative homemaker and hostess, which she did in a quintessential manner that could well serve as a role model for young women today. She attended McMurry College for two years in Abilene, TX and transferred to the University of New Mexico where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1955. She and her high school sweetheart, Larry W. White, married during their senior year at UNM and upon graduation moved to Dallas, TX where Larry enrolled in Baylor Dental College

During the four years in Dallas Lue taught in a Grand Prairie School and later in the Park Cities School System in Dallas, their daughter, Leslie, was born during that time in Dallas, and upon Larry's graduation from dental college, Larry received his DDS degree and Lue her PhT (put husband through). The family moved to Long Beach, CA where Larry began his two years of service in the USAF Dental Corps. Their son, Craig, was born during their time in California.

Upon completion of his military service, Lue and her family moved to Hobbs, NM where Larry maintained a general dental practice for five years before returning to Dallas to complete a two-year course in orthodontics at Baylor Dental College. Many of their best friends were formed during that two year stay in Dallas through Park Cities Baptist Church and endured throughout her life.

The family returned to Hobbs and another home for Lue to apply her skills, taste and ardent attention. Over those early years of marriage, Lue developed remarkable culinary skills, and nothing gave her more joy than giving dinner parties for 6-8 couples. She not only displayed mastery in the preparations but also in her creativity, which caused one guest to quip, "This is the first time I have been served cold soup - (chilled creamed strawberry soup) and hot ice cream (Cherries Jubilee)."

Lue also had an unexcelled and pertinent wit that was spontaneous and hilarious. For example, if someone began to voice a well-known cliche such as "Fools rush in," she would break in and say, "and get the best seats." Or when one would say, "Familiarity breeds contempt." She would immediately follow with "Familiarity breeds content." Her repartee was matchless and entertaining for those fortunate enough to know her.

Lue also discovered an entrepreneurial capacity by developing a company devoted to providing patient motivational materials for orthodontists. This required traveling to several conferences each year and gave her extensive knowledge about travel arrangements, which benefited her and Larry as he began to lecture domestically and overseas. Her extraordinary grasp of airline codes and schedules saved them many times on those journeys.

Lue reveled in her home and family and did her utmost to make that home a comfortable and tasteful refuge for her family and their many friends. Her fidelity to family and friends had no boundaries, and it mattered not if this required traveling 100 miles through a winter blizzard to provide blood for her hairdresser, or if it meant braving an ice storm to bring friends home from a hospital stay in a distant city. Neither did it deter her from traveling hundreds of miles for several weeks to care for two ageing, ailing aunties. Truly, the cups of Lue's family and friends "ranneth" over - many times over.

Lue was born to Homa and Helen Low in Hamlin, TX on September 27, 1933, and grew up in Garden City, TX. Her senior year in high school her family moved to Hobbs, NM, where she met and fell in love with Larry, and they married on July 25,1954, which joyfully lasted and prospered for 69+ years. Lue left this life on April 16, 2024, while at home after suffering several simultaneous strokes. She has left us, but her legacy of devotion, empathy, humor, and kindness will continue to animate those who knew and loved her. A memorial service for Lue will be held in the Ellis Chapel of Park Cities Baptist Church on Saturday, 27 April 2024 at 11:00 AM with a reception immediately following in Ellis Parlor.

Lue was preceded in death by her father and mother Homa and Helen Low and her stepfather, Herman Haynes, her aunts Elizabeth and Lula B Myatt, her sister, Bettye and step-siblings Bobbie and Bill Haynes. She is survived by her husband, Larry, their two children, Leslie Clay and Craig White and their spouses, Jeff and Carol; four grandsons, Alexander Clay, William Clay and his wife, Lezlie, Samuel White and his wife, Mia, Michael White and two granddaughters, Katherine and Paige White and two great-grandchildren, Vivian and Henry Clay.

Lue's family would like to thank C.C. Young's Hospice Team for their affection and professional care during her last days.
