Marie
Brookhart
Aug 29, 1947 — Jan 15, 2025
Claire Marie Holland Munson Brookhart died on January 14, 2025, as a result of complications related to cancer.
Born in Pampa, Texas to Bernadine L. (Wehling) Holland and Edward J. Holland, Jr., on August 29, 1947, Marie's upbringing included time spent in Milledgeville, Georgia and Tuscola, Illinois. After graduating from St. John's High School in Ashtabula, Ohio, Marie graduated from Franciscan University (then Franciscan College of Steubenville) with a degree in French and concentration in art history. A move to Texas with her family took her to Dallas, where she met and married her first husband, Richard Carr Munson. They later moved to Houston, where their first son, William, was born, then to Tyler, birthplace of their second son, Michael. They returned to Dallas in 1989 for her job with Southwestern Bell (now AT&T), where her career spanned decades until her retirement in 2017. Marie and Richard divorced in 1997.
In 2009, Marie married Peter Waterman Brookhart, adding his children and their families to the mix, Ashlie Brookhart McGill (Adam) and Brian Smith Brookhart (Taylor), becoming what they called "The Bunch."
Marie is survived by her husband, Pete; her sons and their wives, William Holland Munson (Annie) and Michael Carr Munson (Caroline); nine grandchildren (Devin, Amoren, Nyx, Henry, Haynes, Sadie, Campbell, Ann Rose, and Cella); Marie's brother and his wife, Joe and Cathy Holland; brother-in-law Bruce Reinwald (husband of deceased sister, Cecilia); and her sister, Phyllis Huff.
She was devoted to historic preservation, volunteering with several groups, and a passion for the outdoors – from reflective hikes in National Parks with Pete to exuberant trips with the "River Divas." She loved singing in the Schola choir at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and routinely attended Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church.
Marie has left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She exuded a quiet competence, often punctuated by a joyful burst of laughter or a sly observation or a "just so" pearl of wisdom. Her love was understated, absolute, and cherished by all.
Please join us in celebrating Marie's life on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, in Dallas, TX. A reception will be held in the church's Fellowship Hall following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, Marie's family suggests donations to Preservation Dallas, at preservationdallas.org.
