Obituary

John E. Masten died on January 9, 2017 of a sudden heart attack at the age of 89 in Plano, TX. He was born in Avon, Indiana on February 27, 1927 and lived his life as a man of Christ. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen Masten; his son, Keith Masten of Plano (wife Deborah); daughter Theresa Howard of Cincinnati (husband Rick); 3 grandchildren, Jason, Ryan, and Erica Howard; and 3 great-grandchildren, Julius, Nadia, and Aryanna; 3 sisters, Doris Carlton (George), Lydia Gibbs (Chub) and Carol Vanlandingham (Roy); 1 brother, Joe Masten (Ruth) and a sister-in-law, Ramona Masten along with many nieces and nephews. John was a devoted and loving husband; a proud and caring Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. Helen and John were true partners, best friends and constant companions who shared the same passions for traveling and the outdoors. John and Helen traveled to Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Prague, and Budapest. They recently went to the Holy Land following in the footsteps of Jesus. They also enjoyed hiking and have visited most of the U.S. National Parks. After graduating from Purdue with a B.S. in Agriculture, John worked briefly as an agriculture extension agent for Indiana's Department of Agriculture. John's love of farming lead him back to the farm. Early in their marriage, they farmed together for approximately 5-years before John's back wouldn't allow him to continue so he went back to Purdue and got his Master's degree. That was the beginning of a career which eventually lead him to the Farm Credit Administration working in offices in both Washington D.C. and Louisville, Ky. A visitation will be held at the Aria Funeral Home on Preston Road in Plano on Monday, January 16, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 2:00 at St. Andrews Methodist Church in Plano.
