Obituary

Native Staten Islander Martin McGrath, 81, of Dallas, a retired educator and a U.S. Air Force veteran, died Tuesday in Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas. Born in New Brighton, he graduated from St. Peters Boys High School. He earned a bachelors degree in education from City College of New York, Manhattan, and later received his doctorate in psychology from St. Johns University, Brooklyn. A sports enthusiast, Mr. McGrath was a member of the wrestling team while in college, and enjoyed swimming, tennis and softball. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War era, from 1950 to 1954, and attained the rank of sergeant. Dr. McGrath had a 25-year career as a psychologist for the former city Board of Education. He retired in 1985 and relocated to West Palm Beach, Fla., where he lived for 25 years before moving to Dallas in 2010. While living on the Island, he attended St. Peters R.C. Church, New Brighton. Mr. McGrath is survived by his wife of 38 years, Santa; his stepson, Dr. Joseph Gaspari; his brother, Michael, and three grandchildren. There will be a memorial mass on March 26 at 10 a.m. at Presbyterian Village North in Dallas. Burial of ashes will take place in Dallas-Fort Worth Veterans Cemetery, Dallas. Cremation was handled by Aria Cremation Service & Funeral Homes, Dallas.
