Vern was born February 25, 1926 in Royalton, Minnesota. He went to be with the Lord August 21, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Florence. He is survived by his children, sons Paul (Betsy) Muncy and Philip (Susan) Muncy, daughter Barbara Muncy; granddaughters Kim Edwards, Jennifer Thomas, Brynne Muncy, Brooke Canning, and grandsons Andrew Muncy, and Blake Pugh; and eight great grandchildren. Vern's family moved to Tennessee during his childhood, where his father was a construction foreman working to build dams for the Tennessee Valley Authority. Vern enlisted in the Marine Corps upon turning 18. He served on Okinawa and in China during World War II. After graduating from Tennessee Tech, where he lettered in football and baseball, he and his wife, Florence, settled in Nashville, Tennessee. Vern first began work as a teacher and coach in the Nashville schools. Then he became a life insurance salesman for the duration of his working life. He was active at McKendree United Methodist Church, where he served in several capacities through the years. Vern loved being with extended family at family reunions, he loved being with his Marine Corps friends at 7th Supply Depot reunions, he loved watching Vanderbilt sports with Barbara while he petted rescue dogs, and he loved watching his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren participate in their events. His kindness and gentle spirit were a blessing to all whose lives he touched.
