Neal Albert Carlson passed away on May 2, 2026, in Plano, Texas, at the age of 85. He was born on June 24, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois to Lucille and Walter Carlson. Neal and his brother Jay grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois. During his high school years, he met Cynthia, who would become the love of his life. The two continued their relationship throughout his college years, seeing each other during summer breaks and beginning a partnership that would last more than six decades.
After graduating from high school, Neal attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1962. Neal and Cynthia were married on May 4, 1963. At 22 years old, Neal began his career with Travelers Insurance and was with the company for more than 40 years. During this time, he also attended Columbia University in New York City, where he earned a certification in Executive Development and Human Resources Strategy in 1978. Through hard work, leadership, and commitment, he earned numerous promotions and relocations throughout his career. Neal and Cynthia built their life together in several communities, including Dallas and Lubbock, Texas, Rocky River, Ohio; and Westport and Simsbury, Connecticut. In 1983, he moved his family to Plano, where they made their home.
Neal was known for his generosity, sense of humor, and genuine desire to bring happiness to others. His many interests included playing and watching golf, running, carpentry, gardening, and cheering for his favorite team the Chicago Cubs.
Neal and Cynthia shared a love of travel and adventure, often enjoying trips together in comfort and style. Among their favorite destinations were Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas, Rancho Mirage, and Napa Valley. They also enjoyed many travels with friends which created treasured memories that Neal carried with him throughout his life.
Neal was most proud of his family. He and Cynthia welcomed their son, Wade, in 1968 and their daughter, Melissa, in 1971. Becoming a grandfather brought Neal immense happiness, especially through his cherished relationship with his granddaughter Britny. In his later years, he delighted in becoming a great-grandfather to Carter and Calvin, whose love and laughter brought him endless joy.
Neal will be remembered by the family he loved and the countless lives he touched with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering loyalty. He will be deeply missed. Neal was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille and Walter Carlson; his brother, Jay Carlson; his sister-in-law, Ann Carlson; his son-in-law Randy Cox; father-in-law Henry Carter; mother-in-law Nedra Carter and brother-in-law Ken Jones. He is survived by his beloved wife Cynthia of 63 years, his son Wade Carlson, and daughter-in-law, Rainee; his daughter Melissa Cox; his granddaughter, Britny Lacy. and her husband, Aaron; his great-grandsons, Carter and Calvin; mother-in-law Mary Carter; niece Amy Carlson Spears, her husband Mark Spears: sister-in-law Denise Jones; and many extended family members and dear friends.
His memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
